Miami Hurricanes WLB Wesley Bissainthe adapting to new role in Guidry D: “I feel we’re going to cause offenses havoc”

By the end of last season, then-true freshman Wesley Bissainthe was starting at WLB the final three games for the Miami Hurricanes. The 4-star signee ended the year with 30 tackles … but had none for losses and no turnovers created.

He expects a big change in that this year … in part because he has a year under his belt, but also because of the new, aggressive defense under coordinator Lance Guidry.

“I feel I have the whole playbook down pat,” Bissainthe said. “Now it’s just a matter of going out and making plays.

“Last year I’d go in and blitz in different packages, but our defense wasn’t really based on blitzing. This year is more complex. I feel it fits me perfectly – I can make more plays, get to the quarterbacks, make interceptions.”

Bissainthe says he expects in addition to blitzing and his tackling responsibilities that he’ll also take on a coverage role at Miami this year.

“I barely covered guys last year,” he says. “But I did that in high school, would go out and cover receivers. In the state championship I went out there at corner, so it’s nothing I’m not used to. I feel I’m prepared for it.”

Bissainthe won’t just be handed the starting job this season. The team has another veteran in Keontra Smith, plus KJ Cloyd is a veteran who was a backup at Louisville that came in and can play MLB or OLB.

Bissainthe is confident in his ability, and will help the team in whatever role he earns.

Certainly he’s done his part this offseason working hard – he’s currently at 220 pounds, up 10 pounds from last season.

“It’s just locking in for (fall) camp, just translating to work,” Bissainthe says. “I feel like I kept my speed, got more power for O linemen when I’m hitting them (with the added weight).”

He also says that he thinks the new Miami defense “is gong to be very impactful.”

“I feel we’re going to cause offenses havoc, will be coming from all different types of directions,” Bissainthe said. “It’ll be something to look at this season and I can’t wait for you to all see it.”
