Miami Hurricanes LB commit Vincent Shavers says Big Ten school still pushing for flip

Miami (Fla.) Central linebacker Vincent Shavers has been committed to the Hurricanes since mid-May, but it hasn’t dissuaded one Big Ten program from attempting to flip the 6-foot, 205-pound recruit.

Rutgers is still fighting to maintain communication with three-star prospect, but Shavers said his recruitment is totally shut down.

Shavers was at the Hurricanes’ end-of-July recruiting barbecue Saturday and said he’s a strong believer in Miami head coach Mario Cristobal, defensive coordinator Lance Guidry and linebackers coach Derek Nicholson are building in Coral Gables and feels his relationship has grown substantially stronger since committing.

“They’re showing the love,” Shavers said. “Me and the coaching staff, the teammates I’m gonna be playing with in 2024, they really stood out to me. I wanted to meet some of my (future) teammates that are committed here, show my family (the campus) and have a great time. Just see what’s going on at the University of Miami, talking to the coaches, talking to coach Cristobal.”

Shavers met Miami four-star running back commit Kevin Riley, three-star kicker Abram Murray and three-star offensive lineman Juan Minaya for the first time this past weekend along with most of the Hurricanes’ out-of-state commitments. Shavers and the rest of Miami’s 2024 pledges spent plenty of time running around the pool, eating snow cones and chopping it up with the Hurricanes’ coaching staff.

Miami’s staff largely talked to Shavers about his family and off-the-field life this weekend, but he said he also had some light conversation with Guidry and Nicholson about the role he’ll play in Coral Gables.

“I know coach said he’s gonna blitz the crap out of me,” Shavers said. “I’m ready for it. I’m not gonna lie; I’m ready for it all. I love it.”

Saturday was Shavers’ first unofficial visit to Miami since his commitment and the first visit he’s taken this summer to a college campus, although he was back on campus for a 7-on-7 tournament earlier this summer. He said he’s planning to take his Miami official visit in-season but does not have a date set. He plans to visit with his mother, father and sister.

CaneSport’s Take

Shavers is hovering around the four-star mark and could make the jump with a strong senior season, and reports indicated he took an encouraging step forward this spring. We’d like to see him continue to improve in pass coverage particularly, but that could become a moot point if Miami plans to use him primarily as an edge rusher.
