Miami Hurricanes CB Daryl Porter, Jr. expects no letdown off bye, strong play from secondary vs. solid Ga. Tech passing attack

Miami Hurricanes CB Daryl Porter, Jr. is part of a secondary that has been so-so in passing yards against this season, with UM allowing 225 per game. And now there’s a big challenge upcoming in the Georgia Tech passing offense.

While the Yellow Jackets are struggling at 2-3 and coming off a loss to Bowling Green, the team’s passing game has thrived behind QB Haynes King. He has thrown for 15 TDs with four INTs and added 176 rush yards and another score. Georgia Tech is No. 19 in the nation in total offense (467.4 yards) and No. 17 in passing offense (300.0 yards).

“We have been working on the little things, every week new scheme, making sure everybody is on the same page, making sure we play fast,” Porter, Jr. said.

Miami’s defense has thrived on totally shutting down the run, allowing only 48 rush yards per game. So how the Canes do against the pass will go a long way toward determining how easily UM can win this game.

Miami enters as a heavy favorite.

And while in the past UM has perhaps not played very well off bye weekends; that is expected to change under Cristobal.

“Practice is still the same, still banging every day,” Porter, Jr. said. “Cristobal is keeping us up to pace. I don’t think we’ll be any slower, I think everything will be the same.”

As for Porter, Jr.’s play? He has eight tackles and two pass breakups, and Pro Football Focus notes opponents targeting him 13 times with only five receptions for 40 yards (and just one yard after catch).

So he’s been faring well in coverage.

Overall Porter is grading out at 68.6 percent, per PFF.

“Coaches are making sure (all the DBs) are on the same page, (and when) we’re on the same page we’re playing faster,” Porter, Jr. said. “That’s the difference. We’re all on the same page.”
