CaneSport is breaking down the top 50 post-spring players on the roster, a list that doesn’t include any post-spring roster additions. Today we break down No. 40, Robby Washington.
NO. 40 MIAMI WR ROBBY WASHINGTON
Why he’s No. 40
There are several true freshmen on this year’s Miami roster that can help this team from Day 1, and the first of the early enrollee newcomers to make this list is Washington. The speedy wideout was banged up a good portion of spring drills but there’s no disputing his game-breaking ability. And in Shannon Dawson’s offense – especially with the lack of playmaking receivers a year ago – you have to think Washington can carve out a niche for himself this season. He chose Miami as a 4-star out of Miami Palmetto High, and other offers he picked up were from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M. That’s a testament to what other top programs saw in his ability. As a high school senior he had 42 catches for 868 yards and 16 TDs, also scoring three touchdowns running the ball and four more as a returner on special teams, a role he’ll also get a long look at for the coming season.
What he needs to do to move up this list
The big thing with a true freshman receiver is you have to be consistent with your route running, hands, understanding of the offense and also show a willingness to block downfield. So if Washington is going to earn a big role this fall that’s what he has to prove he can do. His On3 scouting report this past cycle read, in part, “Has the combination of twitch and long speed. Offensive weapon. Used as a ball carrier in the run game, quick game as a slot receiver and in the vertical passing game as a wideout.”
Realistic season objective
The receiver depth chart doesn’t have any guys how have shown they are “must-start” types at this point, with the leading guy Colbie Young and his underwhelming 367 yards in 2022. Washington got his main looks as an outside receiver in spring ball, with Xavier Restrepo, Brashard Smith and Ray Ray Joseph more in the slot. As a smaller, fast receiver we can see Washington being used this year in certain situations as a deep threat or taking quick hitters in space for big gains. But he’ll have to show he deserves reps over guys like Young, incoming transfers Tyler Harrell and Shemar Kirk along with returners Frank Ladson, Jacolby George, Mike Redding and Isaiah Horton.
