CaneSport is breaking down the top 50 post-spring players on the roster, a list that doesn’t include any post-spring roster additions. Today we break down No. 33, Jared Harrison-Hunte.

NO. 33 MIAMI DT JARED HARRISON-HUNTE

Why he’s No. 33

Because Harrison-Hunte has always had potential, but just never has really gotten things to click. This fall there’s opportunity to emerge at a DT spot that only has one real proven guy in Leonard Taylor (Harrison-Hunte missed the spring coming off injury). Miami coaches would love to see him step up. So far in his Canes career? In 2020 as a redshirt freshman Harrison-Hunte showed flashes, starting one game and totaling six TFL and three sacks. Yes, that was also the year he blocked a kick by Clemson that was returned for a touchdown. The future seemed bright. But he never turned into a dominating player. He started eight games in 2021 and had 6.5 TFL and two sacks, then last year was primarily a backup with the team bringing in Darrell Jackson out of the transfer portal. Harrison-Hunte started twice and had 16 tackles and two sacks. Per Pro Football Focus he graded out at 67.8 overall (70 is considered a good grade) with a 66.1 run defense grade, really bad 27.6 tackle grade and 70.3 pass rush grade.

What he needs to do to move up this list

Show in the fall that he “gets it” and can fit well into Lance Guidry’s physical, attacking scheme. Harrison-Hunte has to get after it each and every rep, an issue for him in the past. The battle for the open tackle spot next to Leonard Taylor has competition with Branson Deen probably the frontrunner coming out of spring. But the team didn’t bring in redshirt junior transfer Anthony Campbell to sit on the bench. He’ll compete to start, too. The other tackles here are Ahmad Moten, Thomas Gore, Jacob Lichtenstein and true freshman Joshua Horton. So there’s just not a lot of real proven guys that can perform at a high level aside from Taylor.

Realistic season objective

Right now we’d probably rate Harrison-Hunte as the No. 3/4 tackle behind Leonard Taylor and alongside Anthony Campbell and Branson Deen. So he should certainly be heavily involved in the rotation and can also push to start. If he can stay healthy and live up to his potential there’s no reason he can’t be making plays in the backfield and maybe even approaching double-digit tackles for loss. But realistically he’s probably looking at a couple of sacks and handful of TFL if he doesn’t emerge as the starter in fall drills.
