CaneSport is breaking down the top 50 post-spring players on the roster, a list that doesn’t include any post-spring roster additions. Today we break down No. 16, Jacolby George.
NO. 16 MIAMI WR JACOLBY GEORGE
Why he’s No. 16
Jacolby George is looking for his first role as a starter at Miami, and he was with the first team throughout the spring and looked like an explosive outside guy. But, with that said, the team added a couple of receivers in the second portal window – Tyler Harrell and Shemar Kirk. Both those guys are looking to push up to the top of the depth chart. So George will really need to be on his game in fall camp if he’s going to continue with the ones. As for his past history? George arrived at Miami as a 4-star highly touted playmaker out of Lauderhill (Fla.) Plantation High School. As a freshman at Miami in 2021 he played in nine games off the bench and had seven catches for 183 yards, then this past season he was suspended for the first two games and never had more than 39 yards in a game (vs. Pitt). He ended with 13 receptions for 130 yards. George also handled returns and had five PR with a long of 18 yards; his lone kickoff return went for 21 yards. So he simply has not been able to showcase his explosiveness to this point. Per Pro Football Focus he graded out at 64.2 percent on offense last season in 168 reps and had a 62.3 receiving grade with two dropped passes on 17 targets.
What he needs to do to move up this list
George looked really good in the spring, including a couple of TD grabs in the spring game. But with Miami adding a couple of transfer wideouts (Tyler Harrell, Shemar Kirk) it’s going to be a battle for him to emerge as the starter. Frank Ladson, Colbie Young (both started games last year), Isaiah Horton and Mike Redding are others looking to get on the field at the outside spots. George does have plenty of ability, he simply hasn’t put it all together in his first two seasons. The receiver position simply was not good last year for Miami, with Young’s 367 yards leading the way. We think George is poised for a breakout season, but he’ll have to earn it.
Realistic season objective
To this point he hasn’t shown that he can get the job done with any consistency in games. But his play this spring showed he might be ready to step up in a big way. This fall George has to show he can be relied on as an outside downfield threat. There is a lot of competition for reps with an 11-strong receiver room. So the best players will emerge. If the spring was any indication, George should be one of those guys. We see 500+ yards and 5+ TDs this season for him.
