Miami extends offer to 2024 DL after strong season opener: “I didn’t expect that at all”

Miami extends offer to 2024 DL after strong season opener: “I didn’t expect that at all”

While Miami may be in the midst of several recruiting battles with some of its top 2024 targets in the class, the Hurricanes have continued to dish out offers to a handful of senior prospects across the country, with the latest being to Layton (Utah) West High School defensive lineman Alvin Puefua.

“I didn’t expect that at all,” Puefua told CaneSport. “Being from Utah, getting an offer from any school on the East Coast is just mind-blowing. (Coaches) wanting to call me and talk to me was amazing. It just blew my mind that a defensive line coach from Miami wanted to talk to me and especially offer me.”

After a strong season-opening debut, Puefua was contacted by Hurricanes defensive line coach Joe Salave’a, who extended the offer to the Utah native late last month.

“Coach Joe called and offered after watching my first-week game against Santa Margarita,” Puefua said. “He was impressed with what I did that game with my effort to the ball, how I shed off double teams, and how I read the run and the blocks.”

Thus far, Utah and Arizona have shown the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder the most interest throughout his recruiting process. Currently, the Utes are the favorites to land his commitment, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Although Miami just recently jumped into the picture, the Hurricanes made a strong impression early and have given Puefua some things to think about moving forward throughout the process.

“They’re pretty high up on my list right now,” Puefua said. “They’re definitely in the top three with Utah and Arizona right now. I just have to get to know Coach Joe some more and learn about the school.”

Along with furthering his relationship with Salave’a, Peufua wants to learn more about the football program and the university as a whole to see if it could potentially be the right fit.

“I just want to see them checking up on me and going over academic stuff,” Puefua said. “Also, how the football program is so that I have an understanding of what the school is if I were to end up choosing Miami. Just stay connected with the coaches and see what’s there for me at the school.”

CaneSport’s take

Defensive line has been a priority for the Hurricanes this recruiting cycle, and after missing out on a handful of top targets, the search has continued to find some talent in the trenches.
