During Miami’s 38-3 season opener win over Miami (Ohio), Miami (Fla.) Columbus three-star defensive lineman Daylen Russell was on hand, and the Hurricanes commit was extremely impressed with what he saw Friday night.

“It was a good game, and I can’t wait to be part of that defense,” Russell told CaneSport. “They love to fly around the ball. I saw a lot of high energy and physicality. That’s something I want to be part of, and I can’t wait.”

Under new defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, the Hurricanes defensive unit shined throughout the contest as they held the Redhawks to just three points and 215 yards of total offense.

From the opening whistle to the last, the Hurricane’s defense stood tall and used a handful of exotic defensive fronts and coverages to disrupt the Miami (Ohio) offense.

“I was very surprised when he started moving the whole defensive line around and dropping some of the ends back in coverage,” Russell said. “It comes with a lot of practice to trust your guys to do that.”

With a much tougher week two test against Texas A&M, a team that beat Miami last season 17-9 at Kyle Field, the No. 106 ranked defensive lineman in the 2024 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking wants to see the Hurricanes play with the same intensity they had against the Redhawks and believes the outcome will be very similar come Saturday afternoon.

“I want them to keep running around and having fun,” Russell said. “I like that game to be just like the one on Friday. 35-3 or 28-3 because that defense is lethal.”

The key to pulling off that big of a win against the Aggies, who are coming off a 52-10 win over New Mexico, according to Russell?

“A lot of preparation,” he said. “I know the coaches are focused on that game. The last game is over, and it’s time to move on.”

CaneSport’s take

Ahead of the contest, Russell is extremely confident in the Hurricanes heading into arguably one of their biggest games of the season. While Russell could not confirm whether or not he would be able to make the game due to his high school football schedule, he let it be known that he is still firmly committed to the Hurricanes and has closed off communication with other programs.

“I’m still shut down at the moment,” Russell said.
