Miami commit Chris Wheatley-Humphrey prepares for weekend return to Coral Gables: “It’s important”

Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward three-star Miami running back commit Chris Wheatley-Humphrey’s summer has been plenty of things — but stressful wasn’t one of them.

Wheatley-Humphrey shut his recruitment down after committing to the Hurricanes April 17 and has spent most of the summer working out, preparing for his senior season and developing his game with help from Miami’s coaching staff. The nation’s No. 60 running back attended a pair of Miami prospect camps during June and said the staff sends footwork and blocking drills the 5-foot-11.5, 170-pound recruit can use in practice.

This weekend will mark Wheatley-Humphrey’s first unofficial visit to Coral Gables since his May 13 visit for the Hurricanes’ elite junior day and pool party at head coach Mario Cristobal’s house.

“It’s important (to return this weekend) because I just want to be around all of the coaches, players and recruits,” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “I also feel like it can be fun and I can have a great time out there at The U.”

Wheatley-Humphrey feels he’s already developed a connection with fellow commits like four-star receiver Joshisa Trader and three-star linebacker Vincent Shavers, who he’s known for some time thanks to the South Florida high school and youth football scenes. They still speak regularly about their lives and the upcoming fall season, but he’d like an opportunity to meet new commits and other recruits at the barbecue.

He also speaks regularly with Miami running backs coach Tim Harris Jr. (their relationship dates back to Harris’ time on UCF’s staff when he also tried to recruit Wheatley-Humphrey) along with a handful of off-field assistants and Mario Cristobal. He chats with a member of Miami’s staff “almost every day” and said the Hurricanes constantly check up on him and ask about his workouts.

He feels particularly close to Harris.

“I feel like when I first met (Harris) at UCF, he was being straight up and kept it real,” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “Ever since then, I think I knew I wanted him to be my coach.”

Wheatley-Humphrey is yet to take his official visit to Coral Gables and does not plan to visit any other schools this fall.

CaneSport’s Take

Wheatley-Humphrey dominated Miami’s prospect camps earlier this summer and has been eager to improve his game at every opportunity. He’s been completely locked in with the Hurricanes since committing in April, and fans have no reason to sweat his recruitment. Wheatley-Humphrey is more than happy cruising to signing day.
