Miami commit Abram Murray making trip down for tonight’s Hurricanes Spring Game

For nine months, Shreveport (La.) C.E. Byrd three-star kicker Abram Murray was the lone commit in Miami’s 2024 recruiting class. Tonight, he’ll represent Hurricanes’ commits at the spring game.

Murray will fly to South Florida for the first time since October this week for Miami’s spring game and is eager to see the progress the Canes have made since his commitment last July. In addition to being ranked by On3 as a three-star prospect, Murray is the fourth-ranked kicker in Kohl’s kicker rankings in his class.

“I think it is important as a commit to attend the spring game to see who could potentially be my teammates,” Murray said. “What Miami built with the 2023 class, I want to repeat that with the 24’s. I want to see all the work that coach (Mario) Cristobal has put in, just to sum it up. I think that Miami is heading in a very positive direction, and want to see all the work they’ve put in pay off the field.”

Murray has maintained regular contact with the staff since committing and wants to be apart of what he feels Miami is building. He’s believed in Cristobal since his time at Oregon and is a substantial fan of off-field assistant Marwan Maalouf, who works with specialists and was responsible for recruiting 2023 punter Dylan Joyce in the last cycle.

But now that he’s committed and Miami has fully shifted its attention to the 2024 recruiting class, Murray feels like his responsibilities have shifted some. He also wants to help recruit other 2024 prospects considering the Canes.

“(The staff is) always positive,” Murray said. “They continue to encourage me, and I give back to them by helping recruit. The kicker typically isn’t the guy to lead a class, but all of my conversations with them have been, ‘Let’s build a top-10 or top-five class.’”

Murray had talked to three-star quarterback commit Judd Anderson before his commitment last week. He thinks the two of them can help recruit another top-10 class as well.

So for now, he’ll continue to do what he refers to as “his part” to help Miami.

“That’s to continue to get better so that I can give Miami all I’ve got when I get there,” Murray said. “To stay in the weight room, and continue to train. As well as help recruit and talk to people.”

CaneSport’s Take

Anderson will be unable to attend Miami’s spring game, so it’ll be up to Murray to try to lead the player-to-player recruiting charge. Expect to see Murray very involved in conversations with other 2024 prospects at the game.
