Miami Central head coach Jube Joseph talks Hurricanes recruiting and Mario Cristobal
During the Miami Hurricanes‘ rise to national prominence in the early 1980s, former national championship-winning head coach Howard Schnellenberger made it a priority to keep some of the top talents from Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties at home, referring to it as the “State of Miami.”
With second year Miami head coach Mario Cristobal looking to recruit elite level talent back to Coral Gables, Miami Central head coach Jube Joseph believes that Cristobal and his staff are beginning to mirror and implement a similar concept to what Schnellenberger did before him.
“I think they’re doing a good job of establishing that fence around South Florida like how Howard Schnellenberger did back in the day,” Joseph told CaneSport. “He’s (Cristobal) rooting in winning home first before he’s going out and he’s taking care of business.”
After bringing a recruiting class that featured eight signees from Broward and Dade counties during the 2023 cycle, with 16 players in total from the state of Florida, Joseph is a believer in Cristobal’s abilities to recruit in one of the most sought-after recruiting areas in the country.
“He’s authentic and genuine,” Joseph said. “He’s not a car salesman, just a straight shooter. I think my kids can appreciate that, my coaches can appreciate that, and I can appreciate that. He’s the type of guy that’s a straight shooter, and I got that from the first time I met him until now.”
Now that high school spring ball is upon us across South Florida, collegiate coaches across the country have made their way to Miami Central to recruit a number of their athletes from the 2024 class and beyond.
“I think they know and see the style of coaching that is done here,” Joseph said. “They know the caliber of the kid that is going to be on campus. If you get a Miami Central Rocket, you’re not only going to get a winner on the field but also a winner off of it. It’s a way of life for us. They’re going to get mentally tough kids that want to be coached hard and want to be coached by guys who want to bring the best out of them.”
With programs across the country looking to pluck some of the top talents out of the Hurricanes’ backyard, Joseph believes if Cristobal and the Hurricanes continue to recruit and prioritize the talents at Miami Central and other local powerhouses, they’ll be just fine as they look to turn the page within a historic collegiate program.
“He’s just got to keep doing what he’s doing,” Joseph said. “Just keep doing your job and changing the culture as far as in that locker room, so you can feel that different energy out there on the field. Bring it back to how it used to be. As a matter of fact, bring it back to where it needs to be. A lot of people like to say ‘the ‘Canes are back’. That was 20 years ago; let’s start some new things.”
