Miami battling major in-state schools, Ohio State for DL Jarquez Carter with official visits set

Newberry (Fla.) three-star 2025 defensive lineman Jarquez Carter has planned to take a Miami official visit for some time, but with a visit formally locked in for June 21, the No. 404 overall prospect and No. 34 defensive lineman in the class feels it’s safe to say the Hurricanes are one of his major contenders.

Florida’s four Power Conference schools (Miami, Florida, Florida State and UCF) along with Ohio State and Penn State are all standing out to the 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive lineman with his spring visits now concluded. Miami co-defensive line coaches Joe Salave’a and Jason Taylor are currently recruiting Carter at the three technique as the Hurricanes look to beef up their interior.

“I’m from down South, and they always tell me, ‘Why would you ever want to leave the state when you have everything you need right where you are?’” Carter said. “They’re always telling me that Miami’s becoming that team that they used to be when they had first-round talent they were putting in the NFL every year. When that was a normal thing for them. I’ve definitely seen what they’re building — what coach (Mario) Cristobal and the rest of that program are building — and I feel like I can fit into that role.”

Carter believes he could elevate his pass rush to another level at Ohio State, Florida State and Miami after extensive conversations with each coaching staff. He said he feels he could become one of the country’s best pass rushers at any of the three schools and eventually become an NFL draft pick, which he added is his ultimate goal.

He said UF’s distance to Newberry and his relationship with defensive line coach Gerald Chapman has kept the Gators a contender. Chapman was one of the first coaches to begin seriously recruiting Carter as an underclassman.

UCF also showed early interest in Carter and made a strong early impression.

Carter visited all six schools this spring and has official visits locked in with Miami, Florida, UCF and Penn State. He also plans to take an official visit to Ohio State this fall.

“It’s really just going to come down to the program that fits me the best, can elevate my game and get everybody where they ultimately want to be,” Carter said. “The next level.”

He plans to commit sometime during his senior season.

CaneSport’s Take

Carter has been a difficult prospect to get a feel for and has shown genuine interest in each of the six schools. It wouldn’t surprise me if this recruitment goes deep into the fall with multiple game-day visits to each school, although he’ll have probably narrowed his list a bit more by the time his senior year starts.  The four Florida programs have been hell-bent on keeping him in state, but I wouldn’t sleep on Penn State or Ohio State given how aggressively both have recruited Florida in the 2025 class.
