Miami a top contender for priority OL heading into official visits: “I think I could fit in at Miami”
Orlando (Fla.) Orlando Christian Prep three-star offensive lineman Demetrius Campbell isn’t ready to name a top school yet, but as he prepares for his four official visits next month, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound prospect views Miami as a top contender.
Campbell will take official visits to Miami, Rutgers, UCF and Ole Miss next month and views the quartet as his top four schools, he told CaneSport. He’ll visit Miami June 7-9 after taking an unofficial visit to Coral Gables in March and receiving an in-school visit from offensive line coach Alex Mirabal earlier this week. Rutgers, Ole Miss and Syracuse have also stopped by his school to check up on him over the last several weeks along with a handful of other schools he does not have official visits locked in with, but he likes how Miami has recruited him as he continues to narrow down his list.
“We’ve really just been talking about how things are going in my recruitment,” Campbell said. “Coach Mirabal, he wants me on the team, he wants me at Miami and I have that official visit set up. It’s going pretty well. They’re recruiting me pretty well, and I think I could fit in at Miami.”
Mirabal and head coach Mario Cristobal have continually preached their track record developing offensive linemen and believe they can have similar success with Campbell, who believes the two can “give me a good chance at a career in the NFL.” He said relationships with a coaching staff will play a strong role in his decision, although he said his player host and interactions with current players on his official visits will also play a factor.
He does not believe distance from home will factor into his decision.
“I’m going to want to be able to get around the players, ask them questions and see if they like it there,” Campbell said. “Because players are players. They’re going to be honest about their situation. So I think those are going to be the biggest telltale (signs) for me.”
Campbell hopes to commit after his official visits but before the start of his senior season — likely in July or August — he said, and believes his official visits will have a large influence on his final decision.
CaneSport’s Take
Campbell received the bulk of his offers in January and February, so no school has a clear advantage or has recruited him for substantially longer than the other programs. Miami, Rutgers and UCF offered him within the same week and have pursued him heavily over the last three months, and Ole Miss has moved quickly since offering him March 30.
