Miami 4-star TE commit Luka Gilbert keeping busy with pledge locked in

Miami 4-star TE commit Luka Gilbert keeping busy with pledge locked in

There’s little that would keep Cincinnati (Ohio) Lakota West four-star tight end Luka Gilbert from signing with Miami this fall after committing in early April. So the 6-foot-7.5, 225-pound blue-chip prospect spent time this summer working with youth football players instead.

Gilbert spent time last month as a camp counselor at his high school’s summer football camp working with kindergarteners through seventh graders. The No. 276 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking worked frequently with younger campers and joked he thinks he has better patience than other players on his high school team. He also said he thinks Lakota West has a few future ballers who could end up being recruited by schools like Miami.

“There’s definitely some tall kids because Lakota West is a big school district,” Gilbert said. “There were definitely some great kids who were just like me.”

Gilbert recently began his school’s offseason workouts after vacationing on Anna Maria Island near Tampa, although he’s otherwise been “messing around” and enjoying not stressing over his college recruitment. Gilbert only visited Miami last month and hasn’t answered schools who have reached out to gauge his interest in other programs.

“I’m just focused on being a Cane,” Gilbert said. “…The (Miami) coaches have done a great job even after my commitment keeping me engaged and growing the relationship, and I’m excited to be a Cane, 100%.”

He added the daily texts and regular phone calls with the Hurricanes’ staff, led by tight ends coach Cody Woodiel, have kept him locked in with Miami. He said Woodiel has done a good job growing their relationship over the past three months and enjoyed meeting several future teammates on his official visit and “did a little bit of recruiting” with several uncommitted targets on his last trip to Coral Gables.

Gilbert also plans to return to Miami later this month for a quick unofficial visit between the July and August dead periods.

CaneSport’s Take

Gilbert and fellow four-star tight end commit Brock Schott give the Hurricanes their ideal tight end combo in the 2025 class. Gilbert is a more traditional in-line blocking tight end capable of being a major play-action threat while Schott could be the perfect H-back in Miami’s offense capable of a variety of uses. Both are locked in with the Canes.
