Miami 4-star flip target, Florida State commit planning for Hurricanes in-season official visit

Miami (Fla.) Central four-star receiver Lawayne McCoy appeared to slip out of the Hurricanes‘ reach when he committed to Florida State April 14, but he’s now planning to take an in-season official visit to Coral Gables.

McCoy, the No. 233 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and a 6-foot, 170-pound wideout, said he is still committed to Florida State but he is “still open to other schools” recruiting him. He emerged as one of the Hurricanes’ top targets this spring and has remained a priority despite his commitment to the Seminoles. McCoy does not have a date set for his official visit.

“Things have been going great in my recruitment,” McCoy said. “I’m still at the same spot, committed to Florida State. I’ll be taking a couple more visits later in the season and a couple more (official visits) too.”

Penn State, Oregon, UCF and Louisville are also pursuing McCoy, but the Hurricanes have consistently managed to snag face time with the athletic slot receiver. McCoy took unofficial visits to Coral Gables this spring, competed in a 7-on-7 tournament on Miami’s campus in June and returned for the Hurricanes’ end-of-July recruiting barbecue July 29. CaneSport reported May 24 his recruitment was far from over, and Miami continued to pursue the four-star prospect with the same intensity this summer.

“The recruitment with Miami has been going great,” McCoy said. “Ever since I’ve been committed to Florida State, they never stopped showing me love. (Head coach Mario) Cristobal, he never stops showing me love. I get texts from him every other day. (Receivers coach Kevin) Beard, he’s texting me and calling me all of the other days. The relationship is still growing, and at the end we’ll just see what it is.”

Florida State has continued to recruit McCoy aggressively since his commitment and has had a strong relationship with the South Florida star since his sophomore year. He said the Seminoles “have shown no flaws” in his recruitment and have been direct and straightforward. He’s taken multiple unofficial visits to Tallahassee as well.

Miami, however, made a strong impression at the July 29 recruiting barbecue as he continued to grow his relationship with Beard. He has maintained a strong connection with Beard since he was hired earlier this spring.

McCoy plans to keep his recruitment open until signing day.

CaneSport’s Take

It’s clear Florida State still leads for McCoy, but Miami has made consistent progress over the past several months. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine lists Auburn with the second-highest chance to sign McCoy, but it feels like the Hurricanes are the No. 2 school heading into the fall. On-field success and significant receiver development could greatly boost Miami’s chances.
