McConnaughey bounces back as Nebraska baseball knocks off Louisiana 4-1

McConnaughey bounces back as Nebraska baseball knocks off Louisiana 4-1

Nebraska baseball (3-2) began the weekend with an emphatic 6-1 win over Louisiana on Friday. Right-hander Mason McConnaughey led the way in his first win of the season, pitching six strong innings.

Nebraska got off to a hot start at the plate — with three hits and two runs in the top of the first — and never looked back. The Huskers added two more runs in both the fourth and eighth frames, capitalizing on four Louisiana errors and multiple fielding mistakes.

McConnaughey gave up a solo shot in the second inning, but that was the only run the Ragin’ Cajuns mustered. Louisiana finished the night with just five hits.

Nebraska will be back in action on Saturday for a double-header against Louisiana.

McConnaughey bounces back in strong outing

McConnaughey had a disappointing start to his 2025 campaign, allowing six runs in just 3.2 innings against UC Irvine last weekend. He struggled to get off the field with two outs, allowing five of his six earned runs in those situations.

The junior responded with a commendable night against Louisiana. After giving up a solo home run to Lee Amedee with two strikes and two outs in the second inning, McConnaughey dialed in. He allowed just two hits the rest of the way and struck out six.

Brumbaugh provides spark at the plate

Nebraska’s leadoff hitter had a stellar performance, getting on base in each of his five at-bats. He began the night with a single up the middle which ultimately resulted in a 2-run first inning.

After reaching on a fielding error in the third, Brumbaugh tallied his first RBI in the fourth. With two runners in scoring position, he grounded to short and beat the throw, scoring Nebraska’s second run of the frame.

A walk in the sixth inning forced a Louisiana pitching change, and a single in the eighth sparked another onslaught at the plate. Brumbaugh finished with three hits, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.

Huskers force Louisiana into bullpen early

In the Ragin’ Cajun’s season opener last Friday, they used just two arms in a 7-2 win. Friday starter Chase Morgan went five innings with seven strikeouts and right-hander James Trimble pitched the final four frames.

The Huskers had other plans.

Morgan racked up 71 pitches through four frames, forcing Louisiana into the bullpen. Trimble relieved him once again but lasted just 1.1 innings this time around. He walked the first three batters of the sixth inning before Matt Deggs turned to left-hander Parker Dillhoff.

The Ragin’ Cajuns used seven arms on the night and totaled _ pitches. _ errors certianly didn’t help, but the Huskers extended their at-bats all night long.
