Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong arrested for assault with a deadly weapon

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested Saturday for assault with a deadly weapon, accoriding to a report from WFAA in Dallas.

Police officers told the TV station that they responded to a call around 3:45 a.m. Saturday morning. They also said that Armstrong and the victim had gotten into an argument when he allegedly hit her with a gun and threatened to shoot her.

Jail records show that Armstrong was booked into jail a few hours later around 7:30 a.m. and had a bond of $35,000 that he has since posted. The Mavericks also released their own statement on the matter.

“The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident,” the team said. “We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing.”

Darrell Armstrong has been an assistant with the Mavericks since 2009 and was on staff when the team won the NBA Finals in 2011. He was also a player for the franchise from 2004-2006, even appearing in the 2006 NBA Finals, which Dallas lost to Miami.

Overall as a player, Armstrong spent 14 seasons in the NBA and put up averages of 9.2 points, 4.0 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Currently, the Mavericks sit at 30-26 on the season and are in eighth place in the Western Conference standings as of the All-Star break. They recently made a blockbuster trade, shipping away Luka Doncic in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a future first-round pick.

Since then, the franchise has had to deal with an injury to Davis, its own fans seemingly turning against it and, now, some more off-court drama involving an assistant coach. We’ll await further information on the case against Armstrong, but it certainly doesn’t look good at the moment.

Dallas will play its first game out of the All-Star break on Friday when it takes on the New Orleans Pelicans. It’s safe to assume that Armstrong will not be on the sidelines for that contest, but it will be interesting to see who, if anyone, fills his role.
