Matt LaFleur reveals his goal for Packers rookies during preseason games

For the Packers’ first preseason game of the 2024 season, Green Bay will travel to Cleveland and face the Browns. That game is scheduled for August 10 with a 3:25 p.m. CT kickoff time. But before the Packers do battle with the Browns, head coach Matt LaFleur shared a few of his thoughts on a number of topics.

Recently, Green Bay’s head coach shared his thoughts on what he expects to see from the rookies during their first preseason game and throughout the preseason.

“I mean, you’d like to see whatever they’re doing to prepare for that game,” said LaFleur. “The game doesn’t change. You want them to be able to take what they’re doing in practice and apply it to the game and not go out there and do something that they don’t practice. And which is, many times, the case; it’s just human nature. Guys, sometimes we’ll freak out when they get into those environments.

“Just to do what they’ve been doing in practice all the time and hopefully get a chance to watch them to compete and control the things that are within their control, in terms of the effort that they play with the physicality. So that’s kind of what we’re looking for.”

In the 2024 NFL Draft, Green Bay opted to bolster its offensive line in the first round. Then, they proceeded to improve their young and talented defense by selecting defensive players with three of their four day two picks. The Packers selected a total of four defensive backs in this year’s draft, with second-round pick Javon Bullard, formerly of the University of Georgia, expected to play a part in the Packers’ defensive success early on.

According to LaFleur, the main thing that he is looking for in the preseason is the proper execution of whatever the players have been working on throughout the offseason and at camp. Doing so effectively and consistently appears to be the rookies’ best avenue to receiving ample playing time in the preseason and possibly in the regular season.
