Mark Stoops defines Brock Bowers as an ‘absolute freak’
There’s no denying Georgia TE Brock Bowers as one of the best players in the nation. Kentucky’s Mark Stoops didn’t even attempt to try as the gave the elite weapon for the Bulldogs a ton of flowers.
Stoops did so during his Monday press conference ahead of the Wildcat’s trip to Athens to play the Bulldogs this weekend. The reporter couldn’t even get the rest of his question out before Stoops started on in admiration and respect for Bowers as a player and competitor.
“Absolute freak, absolute freak. And I mean that in the most complimentary way,” Stoops said.
“What an incredible player, you know? He’s selfless. You can tell,” said Stoops. “(Bowers) is a complete player. He plays well without the football, he plays well with the football. He’s a team guy. You can tell that’s a great guy to work around right there. He steps up when they need him to but a very unique player.”
Bowers is well on his way to leading Georgia in receiving again with 30 catches for 413 yards and three scores. That makes him their current leader in those categories by 10 catches, 187 yards, and two touchdowns.
With this being his third attempt at slowing down Bowers, Stoops went on to compare him to an all-time tight end based on what he has seen firsthand from both
“I had the opportunity to be at Arizona when Gronk was there,” said Stoops. “They’re both different players, unbelievably great and talented. Just different.”
The junior playmaker is simply different in every aspect of his game and has been throughout his collegiate career. Stoops agreed with as much as he closed by describing Bowers as a completely unique player.
“This guy is something I haven’t seen before,” Stoops said.
Assessing Bowers’ impact in latest win, Heisman Trophy candidacy
Georgia TE Brock Bowers had his fingerprints all over the Bulldogs’ 27-20 win over Auburn on Saturday, particularly making an impact late in the game when it mattered most.
He did so much that On3’s Andy Staples crowned him the best player on Georgia’s team and the key piece to their most recent win which DawgHQ’s Jake Rowe agreed with as he broke down the impressive performance from the Bulldogs’ star tight end
“I don’t think they win it without Brock Bowers primarily,” Rowe said. “The impact of Brock Bowers? The one handed catch on third down? Turning that square in into a touchdown to make sure that Georgia didn’t kick three and really put Auburn in a situation where it had drive the entire field? Although Auburn was throwing the football, that seemed like that pretty much ended that ball game. That’s the feeling I got.”
Bowers ended the day with eight catches for 157 yards and the go-ahead touchdown that broke the game’s tie and ended up securing the victory for Georgia, also providing a highlight reel-worthy one-handed catch in the process.
Bowers has established himself as the best tight end in the country. He leads all tight ends in receptions and receiving yards this season. He has also played an integral part in Georgia’s back-to-back national championship wins.
However, while being the most important offensive weapon on the No. 1 team in the nation typically garners Heisman Trophy hype, Staples believes the odds are against Bowers.
“It’s gonna be fascinating to see how people treat him in terms of the Heisman Trophy race,” Staples said. “I do think he’s one of the most important players to his team in the country. I just don’t know that the people are going to recognize that because the numbers for a tight end are not gonna look like the numbers of a DeVonta Smith-type wide receiver, which is what it takes to win the Heisman if you’re not a quarterback.”
