Mark Kingston on job status following early NCAA tournament: ‘Everyone at South Carolina wants to win at a high level’

South Carolina’s season ended on Sunday with a pair of losses in the Raleigh Regional over the weekend. With how the Gamecocks ended the year, the focus now turns to Mark Kingston after his seventh run in charge in Columbia.

Kingston addressed the commitment to baseball at South Carolina following their season-ending, 2-0 loss to James Madison. He said that everyone in their athletic department wants to win and is working to have the programs where they need to be, even if they didn’t have the end result that they wanted on the diamond.

“Everybody at South Carolina wants to win at a high level,” said Kingston.

“I think every program in the country wants to keep getting better and we’re no different. The SEC is filled with teams that are dumping huge resources in. I think it’s just a matter of we need to continue to do everything we can to try to get this program what it needs to be successful,” Kingston said. “There’s so many parts of our program that are in great shape, great shape. But obviously we need to keep getting better – bottom line.”

South Carolina had played better to start out in this postseason. They won three games in Hoover to make it to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. They then won their opener at Doak Field with an 8-7, walk-off victory in extras over JMU.

However, Saturday and Sunday was all it took for the Gamecocks’ season to come to a close. They lost 6-4 against No. 11 NC State yesterday before losing by two in a rematch with the Dukes today.

Those pair of defeats brought South Carolina’s record to 37-25 overall, including a 13-17 mark in the SEC. They also closed out a final 14-game stretch where the Gamecocks finished at 4-10. Within that, they started by dropping all of their final six regular-season games in a pair of sweeps.

That brings Kingston’s total record with the program to 217-155 over seven years. Of the six seasons in which there was a postseason, he had led them to three of them, including a pair of Super Regionals in his debut year as well as last season in 2023.

South Carolina didn’t end their season how they’d hoped with these final two losses. The issue now is whether Kingston will be back again to make the improvements that are necessary for his potential eighth year with the Gamecocks.
