Mario Cristobal sets high standard for Tyler Van Dyke, Miami in spring game
Mario Cristobal lifts the curtain on his second season at Miami with Friday’s spring game. It’s also a chance for him to showcase his new-look offense, once again led by Tyler Van Dyke at quarterback.
Josh Gattis is out as offensive coordinator and Shannon Dawson is in. Cristobal previously told On3’s J.D. PicKell he thinks Dawson and Van Dyke are developing strong chemistry early in spring practice, and that’s why he expects Van Dyke to put together a good showing in the spring game.
“He’s taken to the system really well, man,” Cristobal told ESPN’s Pete Thamel about Van Dyke. “He’s practicing really well. We expect him to play well tonight.”
Cristobal didn’t just set a high bar for his quarterback, though. He did so for the entire roster as spring practice comes to a close. But even though it’s not a regular-season game, Cristobal still wants the Hurricanes to treat it as such.
“We expect our guys to compete and execute at the highest level they possibly can,” Cristobal said. “They fully understand that when you put on that logo, you wear it, you come out, you represent it with pride. We expect our guys to compete hard and try to win each side of the ball. That simple.”
