Mario Cristobal not satisfied after Week 1 win over Florida: ‘You should be pissed’
No. 19 Miami won one of their bigger games in some time with them opening the year with a 41-17 victory over Florida in The Swamp. Even so, Mario Cristobal knows there’s still plenty more for his Hurricanes to do after that season debut.
Cristobal discussed how they would handle this early success during his press conference on Monday. He thinks it’ll be easy to manage actually as they don’t think their team necessarily put out their best on Saturday. That should have them frustrated enough to want to be better in their second outing up next.
“Well, I think it’s pretty simple. I mean, you stay mad,” said Cristobal. “You should be very driven, hungry, and you should be pissed, should be mad.”
“That’s not our best football,” Cristobal continued. “You know, no offense to media but I’m sure the media had, you know, one article written in our favor. And had another article ready to hit send and bash Miami, our people, and our players, you know.”

Miami also knows what it’s like to underachieve by year’s end. With that, the ‘Canes know what they should and shouldn’t do to maintain what they showed to begin with this weekend in Gainesville.
“They’re so, I would say, focused on winning, they’re so about just having enough of years of Miami not reaching its supposed potential that it’s not hard to point out the things that have caused issues in the past at Miami and to bring to light the things that must be done to avoid any setbacks,” said Cristobal.
The 24-point win over the Gators was a great one to start with for Miami. The Hurricanes doubled up Florida in yardage with efforts on both sides of the ball. Cam Ward led the offense with 385 passing yards and three touchdowns in his first game with the team. Their defense then shut off their opponent in an inefficient day with a pair of forced turnovers and just 3.7 yards per play for their attack besides the one 71-yard rushing score.
Still, Cristobal wants Miami to be better. He knows they realize it too with how they’re approaching their second game this weekend against Florida A&M.
“Handling success has got to be as simple as realizing the truth,” said Cristobal. “We’re nowhere near as good as we could be. We left a lot of plays out on the table on Saturday.”
“We’re super excited about the progress that has been made and some things that were done. But we’ve had enough experiences going the other way knowing that this is the best time to be our best.”
