March 27 Visitor List: Penn State hosts its most important prospect yet this spring

Penn State’s coaches and support staff got a much-needed day off from recruiting Sunday. Other responsibilities still kept them busy, but with another round of visits set to begin today, the breather was surely needed.

Monday won’t be anything like we’ve in recent weeks when it comes to quantity, but that’s by design, with James Franklin and his staff set to host just one prospect Monday.

Let’s get into the details below.

RB Quinton Martin

It’s no secret by now that Belle Vernon native Quinton Martin is an incredibly important prospect for Penn State in 2024. A top 100 player nationally and the No. 1 overall prospect in Pennsylvania by every major site, Martin is without a doubt one of Penn State’s top five recruits this year. You can make the argument why a few others could potentially rank higher from a positional perspective, but the point remains that he’s as coveted as they come.

Throughout this recruitment, Penn State has done just about everything fans could ask for. Today’s visit will be his eighth to State College since the fall of 2021. That more double any other school, with Pitt getting him on campus four times, according to On3’s Visitor Tracker.

And yet, despite that, it’s far from a guarantee that Penn State ends up signing Martin. Currently, all signs point to the Nittany Lions being a three-horse battle with Pitt and Ohio State. The other team to monitor appears to be Florida State.

The Seminoles got him on campus last summer and another visit is apparently in the works. Still, when it comes time to sign, Martin has made it pretty clear to everyone that the preference is to stay close to home.

What makes today so important, too, is that this is the first time Martin will be at Penn State without other recruits there. Of those seven previous trips, four of them have been for games. The other three were the past two Lasch Bash Barbecues, as well as a junior day in Jan. 2022.

Martin has always gotten the attention he deserves whenever he’s been on campus, but today’s visit will be the first time an entire coaching staff and all the support staff are focused on him and him only.
