Mailbag: Potential Kansas State captains

Mailbag: Potential Kansas State captains

1. Who is the most talented Kansas State football and basketball target that got away in recent years?

DREW: There is a pretty obvious answer when it comes to Kansas State football.

CJ Stroud’s first official visit was actually to K-State before he exploded and won the Elite 11 Finals. Obviously, the eventual five-star signal-caller went on to have a great career at Ohio State before being selected No. 2 in the NFL Draft last month.

Basketball is a little tougher, honestly. From a legitimate target standpoint, I’m going to say Christian Braun makes the most sense. Bruce Weber and Kansas State spent a lot of time recruiting the Kansas City native, and he took an official visit to Manhattan before ultimately committing to Kansas.

2. What is your take on the Wildcats adding one more football transfer? What position makes the most sense?

DREW: I think adding one more transfer makes a lot of sense. The Wildcats still have a few spots open for the 2023 roster. Adding a wide receiver if it is the right one seems to be on the agenda for Matthew Middleton and K-State.

While the position has a lot of potential, they could use another solid option behind Keagan Johnson and Phillip Brooks. Jadon Jackson and RJ Garcia have some injury history, and there a lot unknown behind that group.

At the same time, it is probably not a glaring need and more of a luxury if Kansas State identifies one worthy of a scholarship.

ICYMI: Yesterday @CoachKli and some area Wildcats were in Wichita for the Catbacker tour. I talked with Klieman on getting Maize 4-star QB @avery2johnson in the program already as an early enrollee this Spring:

3. Who are two candidates to step up leaders for the football team this year?

DREW: Two instantly come to mind, to be honest.

Defensively, the leader is going to be K-State linebacker Daniel Green. He was a major vocal leader a season ago and was voted a team captain by his teammates. It would be pretty shocking if he was not a captain again in 2023.

The Kansas State offense also returns a captain from a year ago in offensive lineman Cooper Beebe. It would also be pretty surprising if he was not voted a team captain for the 2023 season. His comfort level in that role has grown considerably.

4. How worried should we be about K-State having a reliable kicker?

DREW: I’m still not quite worried about Chris Tennant just yet. He has all the potential in the world to be an NFL kicker and just has to put it all together. The expectation is that he will receive another crack at it at K-State.

5. Are there any transfer wide receiver targets worth mentioning?

DREW: Only one is worth mentioning at the moment. Kansas State was starting to like Alante Brown from Nebraska before he committed to Michigan State on Friday. Remember, K-State is only going to take a wide receiver if it is the right one.
