Mailbag: Is the Kansas State transfer haul a successful one?
1. Will Kansas State even fill out the roster with guys that played Division I basketball roster last season?
DY: Folks need to get tougher and have more of a stomach when it comes to recruiting. Not all hope is lost and it never was at any point because there was still a path that existed. Kansas State missed on guys just like other programs tend to do as well.
If you want to be a great team, you get involved with several recruitments that are challenging to win and aim to come out on top for a few of those. The Wildcats have already done that. They will come out on top for a few more. They may lose a few more. They aren’t any different from other good teams.
In fact, Jerome Tang and K-State can still form a very talented roster. There’s four spots left, and there’s reason for hope when it comes to guys like Achor Achor and Riley Kugel. Other viable targets also remain, like Cedric Coward.
Don’t give up on the Wildcats.
2. Does Dylan Edwards or Keagan Johnson have more receiving yards this season?
DY: Give me Keagan Johnson. Kansas State will use both in the passing game often, but Johnson won’t have to share his production with also time in the backfield as a ball-carrier. Johnson will have more chances in the passing game.
3. Has the K-State basketball portal cycle been a net gain or a net loss?
DY: Let’s first take the stock. K-State lost Jerrell Colbert, Cam Carter, Dorian Finister, RJ Jones, Arthur Kaluma, Dai Dai Ames and Ques Glover to the transfer portal. Finister hardly would have played, Glover has yet to play in a regular season game for the Wildcats and Kaluma could still return.
They have added Brendan Hausen, CJ Jones, Max Jones, Baye Fall and Dug McDaniel. Fall is a project underneath the basket. But all four of Hausen, CJ Jones, Max Jones and McDaniel shot over 35 percent from the three-point line last season and three were nearly at 40 percent from beyond the arc.
I’d call it a net gain at this point, and Kansas State isn’t finished.
4. When will the basketball roster be completed?
DY: I foresee Jerome Tang filling at least 12 of the spots by the end of May.
5. Will Kansas State chase basketball targets committed elsewhere?
DY: We have heard that it’s an option on the table, but the wheels don’t seem to be turning fast enough to call anything imminent at this time. We are confident that K-State has explored it or that former targets have peeked once again at the Wildcats.
Arthur Kaluma/Kansas State Athletics
6. Does Arthur Kaluma return?
DY: Undetermined. Some of it hinges on Kaluma not opting to remain in the NBA Draft conversation and just try to play overseas or in the G-League. Some of it is dictated by Kansas State being his desired option if he chooses to return to school. Some of it is dependent on there being a spot available, too.
He entered the transfer portal. While they’ve left the door open for Kaluma to return, the Wildcats still have to recruit as if he isn’t just to take care of themselves.
7. How long will it be before K-State gets another commit?
DY: Football? Not long. I’ll have my eye out on a transfer target in UConn quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson, as he will be visiting Manhattan beginning on Sunday. Basketball? Again, not long. I could see some action this week.
