Mailbag: Five biggest freaks on Kansas State roster

Mailbag: Five biggest freaks on Kansas State roster

1. How is the Kansas State wide receiver unit looking?

DY: Not that we have seen a bunch since 99.9 percent of Kansas State football practices are closed, but offensive coordinator Collin Klein did call the position group the standout of camp on the offensive side of the ball earlier this week.

Much of that has been because Keagan Johnson is really, really just that good and RJ Garcia seems to have turned another corner.

2. Give us a hot take on the team.

DY: I’m not sure how hot it is, but I believe that the K-State passing offense will be very explosive this year. A lot of that is because of Will Howard. A lot of that is the previously mentioned Keagan Johnson plus Ben Sinnott.

Some of it is my belief that Howard will uplift the pass-catching weapons in general. I’m becoming more and more bullish on a huge, huge year from the Kansas State signal-caller. He’s a man on a mission and another year under Klein as a play-caller should work wonders.

3. Does RJ Jones contribute the most of the K-State true freshmen?

DY: I have long felt that way, and the K-State games in the Middle East have only strengthened that case for RJ Jones, in my opinion.

4. What is the likelihood that Uso Seumalo and Daniel Green are both back by the Missouri game?

DY: Very high. My understanding is that it would be quite the shock if either one of Kansas State defenders Daniel Green and Uso Seumalo missed up to three games.

5. Who will win the kicking and punting duties?

DY: As we have continuously stated throughout the offseason, the plan has been for Jack Blumer to be the K-State punter all along. That is why he returned to campus for a sixth season. Another belief that has not waned is that Chris Tennant will be given another shot to be the team’s kicker.

6. Pick the five freaks from the Kansas State roster.

DY: One has to be Tobi Osunsanmi. His blend of size and speed is unmatched. For that matter, Seumalo should be included. He’s a massive human being with some surprising agility and quickness. Kansas State offensive tackle KT Leveston has unreal flexibility for a guy that is north of 320 pounds.

Surprisingly, Avery Johnson should probably qualify. He may be slight of build and not necessarily physically up to par just yet, but his acceleration, speed, athleticism and elusiveness is at a world class level. And for the same reason as Osunsanmi, my last pick would be K-State cornerback Will Lee.

7. How important is it that they not burn the redshirt on the majority of players like Avery Johnson?

DY: I’m going to be honest. I don’t think it matters as much anymore. Guys rarely stick around at the same school for five years. Because of that, I just wouldn’t concern myself over the redshirts of anyone if I was a college coach.

I’d only make it a point if the athlete is insistent upon a certain direction, as to do right by them.

In the case of Johnson, a redshirt may be in his future. At this point, I think he is genuinely third in the quarterback rotation, just behind Jake Rubley. Maybe they want his dynamic playmaking ability on the field at times, but they also can’t make it a platoon situation that disrupts Howard’s rhythm.

8. What new wrinkles will we see in year two of the Collin Klein offense and year three of the 3-3-5 defense?

DY: Offensively, it’s not that I really have any specifics on what more Kansas State will be able to do this year. However, generally speaking, I believe that they will have much more of a vision, plan and enough experience to be able to take more shots and be more aggressive.

By nature, I think Klein likes to take some chances and push the envelope. His philosophy, admittedly, has been to apply as much pressure on a defense as possible. So, a bit more of an aggressive approach and maybe even more pace and tempo can be expected.

Defensively, that’s tougher to answer. More than anything, they just know how to fit the pieces better and what skill-sets and body types belong where when they assemble the alignment of the 3-3-5 scheme. That’s why there’s a few position switches each year.

However, it may be a bit of a process on that side of the ball just because K-State defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman has more pieces to replace.
