Madison Central scores 35 unanswered to down Lexington Catholic on the road

After starting the season as the No. 21 team in the state in KSR’s Kentucky High School Football 2024 Preseason Top 25 Rankings, Lexington Catholic went on the road and lost in a low-scoring, 17-7 affair to Highlands, and that resulted in them falling out of the Top 25.

However, here in Week 2, the Knights had a great opportunity ahead of them. On Friday, they hosted Madison Central, a team that had beat Johnson Central convincingly last week. If Lexington Catholic were to win against the Indians, then they would most likely be propelled back into the Top 25.

For Madison Central on the other hand, this served as a chance for them to assert themselves as an up-and-comer in Class 6A. With a win, they would also likely make KSR’s Top 25 rankings next week. In the end, it was Madison Central who came out on top in a 35-21 victory.

It didn’t seem like that would be the case early on, however. With 6:57 left in the first half, Lexington Catholic senior quarterback Matthew Kern would sneak into the end zone to give the Knights a commanding 21-0 lead.

What we didn’t know at the time, however, is that play would be the last time the Knights would score in this game.

Madison Central senior running back Bryant Mathis had himself a night, scoring three touchdowns on the ground for the Indians. His second came just before the first half reached its conclusion, and it was 21-14 Lexington Catholic at the break.

From there, it was all Madison Central. Whether it was forcing turnovers on defense or dominating at the line of scrimmage and establishing the running game, the Indians were rolling. It seemed like Coach William Blair had crafted a perfect game plan heading into the final two quarters.

Even the passing game was working for them. It even led to a touchdown reception from senior wideout Cody Morrison with just 68 seconds to go in the third quarter. At that point, Madison Central led 35-21 — what the final score would end up being.

TOUCHDOWN MADISON CENTRAL! This time through the air!

Make that 35 UNANSWERED for the Indians!

The Indians advance to 2-0 on the young season, while Lexington Catholic falls to 0-2 for the first time since 2013. It won’t get any easier for the Knights in Week 3 as they have to take on No. 6 Corbin on the road in what will prove to be a very difficult matchup for them.
