Lucky Charms: Coach’s take on Notre Dame EDGE commit C.J. May

Lucky Charms: Coach’s take on Notre Dame EDGE commit C.J. May

I walked into the Highland Home (Ala.) High field house and was greeted by Will Pouncey, who said, “Welcome to the middle of nowhere.” It’s a quaint town in South Alabama with a reported population of less than 1,500 people, and it has a Notre Dame commitment among its residents.

That player is C.J. May, a class of 2025 prospect who ranks as the No. 232 overall prospect and No. 19 EDGE nationally per the On3 Industry Ranking. Blue & Gold spoke with Pouncey to get the rundown on his star prospect after a walkthrough practice Thursday afternoon.

Pouncey on the scouting report for May….

“He’s a great football player. You see his frame and how big he is. He’s become a very mature young man, too. He’s very athletic and brings a tenacity off the edge. C.J.’s combination of speed and bull rush is rare at any level, especially here in South Alabama at the high school level.”

On May’s best position…

“For us, he’s a five-technique, hand in the ground guy. He does a really good job with it. He’s a big body who can control the run and is also a very good pass rusher. C.J. has strong arms, has good hand technique, can flip his hips and is a nightmare for offensive tackles.”

On his reaction upon learning May committed to Notre Dame…

“I was excited. That grows our brand here at Highland Home. We’ve had some big-time recruits here lately, and C.J. is going to Notre Dame, which is one of the most prominent brands in college football with that history. Notre Dame is second to none when it comes to that, and us having a guy committed there is great for our program. The coaching staff there has done a phenomenal job of recruiting the South. I couldn’t be more excited for him to commit there.”

On May as a young man…

“He’s very social. C.J. can walk into any room, talk to people and show respect. He lights up the room. There’s no awkward situations with him. For him going from South Alabama to South Bend, there won’t be a cultural shift that will affect C.J. He’s been exposed to a lot; he’s done his research and been on many recruiting visits. He can fit in anywhere he’d go.

“He’s great academically. He’ll be a no-problem qualifier, and I know Notre Dame is a prestigious school. Getting a degree from Notre Dame is a huge on its own. He’s always been an A/B student, and his ACT scores are great. That’s a point of emphasis for him.”
