Lucas Glover wins FedEx St. Jude Championship in dramatic playoff finish

Lucas Glover wins FedEx St. Jude Championship in dramatic playoff finish

Nobody is playing better golf on the PGA Tour right now than Lucas Glover. The 43-year-old has won back-to-back tournaments after collecting a win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday.

Glover needed an extra hole to defeat Patrick Cantlay in the weekend event. The two were tied at -15 for the tournament through 72 holes, forcing a playoff.

Replaying the 18th hole, Glover carded a par and Cantlay needed to sink a lengthy putt to take the playoff to another hole. But Cantlay narrowly missed his attempt, giving Glover his second-straight victory.

Last week, Glover scored his first win of the PGA Tour season at the Wyndham Championship. He won that event by two strokes, shooting -20 for the tournament.

Glover now owns career victory number six on the PGA Tour. He also won the John Deere Classic in 2021. Prior to that, he hadn’t won an event since the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship.

Glover started the week off solid, shooting a 4-under-par 66 on Thursday. He carded five birdies with just one bogey to open the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He followed that up with an even better outing on Friday, shooting a 64, which included an eagle on the par-5 16th.

In his second round, Glover didn’t card a single birdie, getting to -10 for the tournament.

Glover then shot another 66 on Saturday before rounding out the tournament with a 1-under-par 69 on Sunday. It proved to be good enough to force a playoff with Cantlay and get the win.

It’s been an impressive two weeks for the 43-year-old. Can he keep the hot streak going?

Lucas Glover comments on FedEx St. Jude victory

Following a nail-biting finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Glover talked about the fierce competition down the stretch. He knew things would get interesting.

“It was just keep fighting, keep fighting,” Glover said on CBS. “Closing holes here aren’t easy birdies, and aren’t easy pars really under pressure, so it was just keep fighting, stay close, stay close, and I was fortunate to get in a playoff. I said yesterday the guns would be coming, and they came.

“I was just last man standing this week.”

Thanks to the back-to-back victories, Glover has skyrocketed to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. It’s a 45-spot jump from where he was last week. The top three spots belong to Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, respectively.

Cantlay owns the fifth spot.
