LSU’s Trey’Dez Green is no longer juggling football and basketball

The LSU men’s basketball team had a convincing win over South Carolina on Tuesday night, giving the Tigers a pair of back-to-back wins after beating Oklahoma in Norman this past weekend.

Absent from both games was freshman Trey’Dez Green, a former 5-star tight end who had a breakout debut season on the gridiron this past fall, a season capped off with two touchdowns in the bowl game in over Baylor.

Green spent the entire fall with the LSU football team, but when the season ended on New Year’s Eve, the two-sport standout shifted his focus to bringing depth to the LSU basketball team.

Green made his debut against one of the top teams in the country when he logged nine minutes of playing time at Alabama on Jan. 25.

Green went on to see action in six games for the Tigers, with his final action coming on Feb. 12 in a road loss at Arkansas. Green saw two minutes and had one rebound in his final outing, and his six-game stretch with LSU resulted in 11 points, 10 rebounds and a memorable block that led to a left-handed dunk against the Tide. Green averaged just short of 7 minutes played during his time on roster.

“Just after visiting with coach (Brian) Kelly and Trey’Dez, the academic workload is very heavy, so he’s going to be focusing on those academics for the time being and rejoin us at a later date,” basketball coach Matt McMahon said.

LSU two-sport standout Trey’Dez Green will reportedly be stepping away from the basketball team to focus on his academics, according to a report from NOLA.com.

Green joined the basketball team following football season, appearing in six games.

He has averaged just 6.7 minutes per contest, scoring 1.8 points per game and securing 1.7 rebounds per outing. So his contributions on the hardwood won’t be sorely missed, though the Tigers will hope to get him back before too long.

The decision came after McMahon, Kelly and Green met to discuss juggling two sports and the freshman’s academic courses.

The decision also included conversations on a path for Green to potentially return to the basketball team over the next month.

The 6-foot-7, 245-pounder is set to participate in LSU Football’s Spring Practice stretch from March to April.

In his first season with the football team, the former On3 5-star tight end appeared in 13 games with two starts, finishing the season with 13 catches for 101 yards and four touchdowns – with six of those catches, 56 yards and two touchdowns coming in the Texas Bowl victory over Baylor.
