LSU’s Flau’Jae Johnson speaks on decision for senior season

Although not official, LSU’s star guard Flau’Jae Johnson made some strong statements on her podcast “Best of Both Worlds” about her return to LSU and coming back for her senior season on Thursday night. Johnson indicated that she would be returning to LSU, saying at one point, “I want to graduate at LSU.”
She talked about the Tigers’ recent addition Kate Koval and her excitement to play with her, among other topics.
“Kate Koval, Notre Dame to LSU, a 6’5″ sophomore forward,” Johnson said. “Super excited about that landing. Y’all already know post players are important to everything we do, so we need a dominant post. She visited LSU and ended up going to Notre Dame, but I’m excited for her to be coming here and I’m excited to play with her. I’m always excited to play with new people. We’re going to have a nice presence in the paint starting with her.”
Johnson had reportedly thought about going to the WNBA as she was eligible to declare after the season, but ultimately she decided to remain in college. After that decision, she had to weigh her options to see whether she was entering the transfer portal or if she was returning to LSU.
While the deadline for the portal isn’t for another two weeks, Johnson sounds like she’s made her decision after having conversations with Kim Mulkey.
“There was a lot of talk about me going into the draft. I thought about it, but first of all, I’m not trying to go out on an L, second of all, you have to think about the CBA, third, I want to try to win. I know I can develop more. I’m a great player but I can’t turn it on and off. I love the WNBA but I don’t think it’s time yet. I talked to coach Mulkey and we had a real conversation about how things are going and that really helped us see what we both think and how I can make this year my best year.”
It’s not an official release, Johnson’s words seem to indicate a return and with that give the Tigers back an All-American talent at guard. Johnson comes off of a year averaging 18.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists as the heartbeat of LSU’s team. Johnson had 28 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks in the final game of the season against UCLA, but talked on the podcast about being more consistent in her final season and keeping her foot on the pedal.
She’s become a mainstay in the women’s basketball sphere and now likely returns for Baton Rouge looking for a championship in her final season.
