LSU sends multiple coaches to visit 5-star+ QB Bryce Underwood

LSU sends multiple coaches to visit 5-star+ QB Bryce Underwood

LSU quarterback commitment Bryce Underwood is the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle, per the On3 Industry Rankings.

Underwood had offers come in from coast-to-coast following a run of back-to-back state titles and film that stood out among a talented crop of passers.

At the time, Joe Sloan was LSU’s quarterbacks coach, and he was able to get in early in the race for Underwood’s commitment. Over time, Sloan and the staff in Baton Rouge continued to get the 5-star+ quarterback to campus on trips from Michigan to Louisiana. And each time, Underwood would travel with his family by his side.

In January, Underwood announced his commitment to LSU – giving the Tigers one of the highest-rated prospects the program has landed in the modern recruiting era.

With 12 total commitments and a trio of 5-stars on board, LSU has the No. 1 class on the On3 Team Recruiting Rankings, while checking in at No. 2 behind Ohio State on the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.

With college coaches permitted to visit in-person with a prospect once during the spring evaluation period, the Tigers flew to Michigan for an all-day stay in Belleville on Tuesday.

Sloan is joined on the trip by LSU assistant head coach and running backs coach Frank Wilson, giving the Tigers a pair of staff members on the trip.

Underwood made visits to LSU in both March and April, and he’s set to return to campus again ahead of his senior season in the fall.

Underwood has been firm with his commitment to the Tigers as he helps recruit others to the class, he told On3 earlier this month.

As the headliner of not just LSU’s class, but the 2025 cycle, Underwood could go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 overall prospect in the country.

“Underwood continues to look like the top pure arm talent in the cycle,” said Charles Power, On3’s Director of Scouting and Rankings. “The ability to drive the ball to all levels of the field stands out at this stage. He also showed perhaps the best pocket movement among the group, sensing and reacting to pressure by moving vertically within the pocket.

“Underwood turned in another strong season in 2023 with the one of the best statistical passing years of any quarterback in the On300. The Belleville (Mich.) High standout completed 64.9% of his passes for 3,329 yards (a gaudy 12.4 yards per attempt) for 41 touchdowns against three interceptions. He also ran for seven touchdowns.

“Underwood should technically be a 2026 prospect, as he turns 17 in mid-August. Given his physical ability, on-field play and production and room for continued improvement, we don’t currently see a player with a higher long-term upside in the cycle.”
