LSU Recruiting Tidbits: What could the WR class look like?

LSU Recruiting Tidbits: What could the WR class look like?

LSU hosted six wide receivers for official visits in June, while others traveled to Baton Rouge for unofficial visits and the summer camp circuit.

Headed into the month of July, the Tigers hold one commitment at the position in Louisiana’s top-ranked wide receiver TaRon Francis. Francis has remained locked in on his verbal pledge to the Tigers, and he moved up the On300 rankings this week and into the Top 200. With the movement, the New Orleans 4-star prospect is now ranked as a Top 20 wide receiver prospect in the 2025 class.

Which other wide receivers remain in play for the Tigers as prospects continue to inch closer to college decisions?

Here’s the latest scoop from The Bengal Tiger staff as LSU look to build on the position as wide receiver dominos drop around the country.

The 5-star WR targets

One-time LSU commit Dakorien Moore committed to Oregon this past weekend, once again shocking the in-state Longhorns as the Duncanville product chose a team outside the Lone Star State for a second time.

Where do things stand with the other two 5-star wide receivers LSU hosted for official visits in June? On3 National Recruiting Directors Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons joined up to share their thoughts, as well as an update on how The Bengal Tiger’s Shea Dixon sees things unfolding.

Texas 5-star WR Kaliq Lockett: No. 3 WR, No. 18 overall prospect

“Kaliq Lockett has his decision date set for August 7 with Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M as the finalists. The Longhorns are the current On3 RPM favorite. The Crimson Tide are currently considered the biggest challenger. Keen on the other three, we’ll see if one of them can make a move over the next month.”

Shea Dixon’s Take: Lockett talked up LSU a ton early in his process, but it feels like a stretch of official visits elsewhere, coupled with Texas losing out on Dakorien Moore and Alabama offering and getting into the mix with Lockett on an official visit in June, has the Tigers trailing.

Florida 5-star WR Jamie Ffrench: No. 4 WR, No. 19 overall prospect

“On3’s No. 3 ranked receiver Kaliq Lockett has his decision date set for Aug. 7 with Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M as the finalists. The Longhorns are the current On3 RPM favorite. The Crimson Tide are currently considered the biggest challenger. Keen on the other three, we’ll see if one of them can make a move over the next month. Lockett ranks as On3’s No. 21 prospect overall.”

Shea Dixon’s Take: If I were to pick a prospect LSU had a better shot with between Lockett and Ffrench, I would lean towards Ffrench. Both have taken multiple visits to campus and certainly have strong relationships with the staff. As for Ffrench, his mother’s family ties to Louisiana are notable given she grew up in the Felicianas and attended college at Southern. With plenty of family still living in the Baton Rouge area, the Tigers have certainly leaned on the “home” feel with the program’s pitch.

Another Top 10 WR LSU is pushing for

With six wide receivers having made official visits to LSU in June, three are now committed with Moore to Oregon, Florida 4-star Cortez Mills to Oklahoma and Georgia 4-star CJ Wiley to Florida State.

Beyond Lockett and Ffrench, the lone uncommitted wide receiver among the six is Nevada’s No. 1 prospect Derek Meadows. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) favors Notre Dame, but LSU’s staff has never let up on Meadows, which was a big reason the Tigers landed one of the 4-star prospect’s official visits this past month.

Ahead of his summer official visits, Meadows had visited Notre Dame more than any college team, but he told the On3 staff the plan was to take a closer look at his other options – including a handful of SEC schools.

Now, the buzz out of South Bend is not as strong as it once was for a Top 10 prospect who many presumed was a lock to land with the Irish. Instead, things got shaken up. On May 31, Meadows began the first of five official visits that went in the following order: Michigan, Georgia, Notre Dame, LSU and Alabama. From there, the uncertainty around Notre Dame’s chances began to waver.

The Crimson Tide have buzz around the Bishop Gorman rising senior’s recruitment after getting the final official visit, which comes on the heels of Alabama reeling in double-digit commits across the month of June.

Still, multiple sources feel LSU has remained firmly in the mix for Meadows down the stretch, and a source close to the 4-star wide receiver’s recruitment circled LSU alongside Alabama as the SEC teams that emerged as frontrunners in the battle against Notre Dame. And with 5-star+ quarterback Bryce Underwood committed as part of a Top 5 recruiting class, and LSU coming off a 2023 season that finished with the Tigers having the NCAA’s No. 1 offense, there’s plenty to pitch to a prospect like Meadows.

Michigan has also been in the mix, but there’s not been any increased confidence coming out of Ann Arbor as a decision day nears for Meadows.

With a decision coming in July, and Meadows mulling over his options for a final time, the Tigers have a legitimate shot to reel in Nevada’s top football prospect and the state’s Gatorade Track-and-Field player of the year.

At 6-foot-6, 205 pounds, Meadows checks in as the No. 7 wide receiver and No. 40 overall prospect on the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2025 class.

The Louisiana WR to keep an eye on

With Edna Karr’s TaRon Francis committed, who could be next up for the Tigers as LSU evaluates the state of Louisiana for wide receivers?

Destrehan’s Phillip Wright has an offer from LSU’s staff, and with a decision date set for July 13, the Tigers are in the final three alongside Michigan and Georgia.

Michigan holds the On3 RPM lead and are considered by many to be the expected pick, but don’t sleep on LSU. The LSU staff, including area recruiter Frank Wilson, has been turning up the heat on Wright this offseason, and that push increased after he logged two impressive personal-bests on the track with a 10.46 100-meter dash and 21.41 200-meter dash this spring.

Whether Wright picks LSU or not on Saturday isn’t the biggest thing to monitor. Instead, if the Tigers aren’t the choice, could a team like Michigan hold off a hard push from LSU’s staff between now and National Signing Day? Don’t be surprised if Wright is on LSU’s signee list when the dust settles on the 2025 class.
