LSU players discuss team meeting following SEC Tournament exit

LSU saw their stay in Hoover at the SEC Tournament cut short before the semifinals. Arkansas bounced the Tigers out, leaving them to focus on the NCAA Tournament. It’s worked thus far, with head coach Jay Johnson preparing to have his team take the field in Omaha. But it’s been the players leading the team over the past couple of weeks, beginning with a team meeting.
Star outfielder Dylan Crews revealed what the message of the team meeting was heading into the Baton Rouge Regional. LSU made sure they were going to play LSU baseball. Doing so is a good thing, as the Tigers were consistently one of the best teams in the country — a good recipe when competing for the national champions.
“Just sticking to our game really,” Crews said. “I think we’re in a very good spot right now. Like I said, the momentum is tremendous in this team right now. I think everything is just kind of clicking for us right now.”
Most teams have an area where they excel and rode it on the way to Omaha. LSU has been firing on all cylinders lately. The goal is to keep the ball rolling at the College World Series, with Tennessee first up on Saturday evening.
“Bullpen is doing really well,” Crews said. “Starting pitching has just been dominant. Our approaches have been great in the batter’s box. Really just sticking to our plan, no matter change of the field, change of the atmosphere. Just sticking to our plan, that’s it.”
Starting pitcher Thatcher Hurd got in on the conversation as well but did not have too much to add. Crews summed things up pretty nicely according to him, reiterating the key of LSU playing LSU baseball.
“I think now more than ever it’s all about just staying true to ourselves, and what’s got us here,” Hurd said. “I think that Dylan said it perfectly.”
Paul Skenes will be on the mound for LSU to kick things off. When Crews talks about starting pitching being dominant, Skenes centers around much of the conversation. Nobody in Omaha has a player like him as Skenes continues to mow through elite-level lineups.
If he can do so against the Vols, the favorable 1-0 game will be in play on Monday for LSU. They will be hoping Skenes will be the beginning of a national championship run over the next week.
