LSU has a big visit on tap with Wardell Mack

The LSU football staff is hosting the annual “Bayou Splash” recruiting event at the end of July, and Louisiana’s Wardell Mack is one of the biggest names on the visitor list.

Mack recently trimmed his offer list to just four teams: LSU, Texas, Florida and Florida State.

“These are the top teams that showed me I was a priority to them,” Mack told On3. “They showed me how they want me in their programs and I can definitely see myself at all four of these schools.”

“I’m in tune with all the head coaches in my final four.”

LSU set to host Mack at the “Bayou Splash” in July

Mack did not visit LSU’s campus in June, instead choosing to make a handful of official visits to programs like Florida, Florida State and Texas.

While Mack still has an official visit on tap for LSU, he’s set to make an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge on July 28 for the program’s “Bayou Splash” recruiting event.

Given a decision is on the horizon, the timing of Mack’s visit to LSU is key given the NCAA dead period begins again at the start of August – leaving less than a week in late-July for college coaches to meet face-to-face with high school recruits.

“That’s the home team and I know I’m a priority,” Mack said this week, adding that LSU head coach Brian Kelly has played an active role in his recruitment. “I know how the relationships are there.

“Every time I step foot on campus, it’s the love they show me. Coach BK told me that he watched film from my (junior) game before the Ole Miss game (in October). After watching my film, he told me I was a potential No. 7 for LSU, that I could come in and dominate in all phases of the game and change the game.”

Texas, Florida both making a splash

With official visits made to Texas, Florida and Florida State in June, Mack recently announced a top four that included all three schools and LSU.

The final official visit of June went to the Longhorns, and Mack’s time in Austin coupled with head coach Steve Sarkisian’s push this offseason has left a lasting impression that has Texas firmly in the race.

“They’re texting me every day, getting me around Coach Sark, which is important, and making sure we get a lot of face-to-face time together,” he said. “Sark’s really making his presence felt in my recruitment.

“This spring, Coach Sark came to see me the most. They showed me how much of a priority I was on the official visit. He sat down and broke down how he feels about the way I play my game — how I dominate — and he feels I’m one of the best players in the nation. For a coach from out of state, from the big state of Texas to come into Louisiana, that says a lot.”

Mack is also expected to give the Gators another look before August’s dead period arrives, a trip that would come on the same weekend he’s set to visit LSU.

“It’s a great place with great people, and you can see the program is being turned around by this new staff,” Mack said. “It’s just a different vibe up there and I can really see myself up there at Florida. Being around the players, the coaches, everyone is just real.”

Mack not expected to drag out his recruitment for long

For much of his recruitment, the Top 20 overall prospect on On3 said he wanted to have his recruitment wrapped up ahead of his senior season at John Ehret.

Now, it appears that’s still a possibility.

“Honestly, I’ve been waking up and dreaming about it,” Mack said of committing. “Being in each place, I’ve been thinking hard about it.

“It could be at any time. One day I feel like I’ll wake up and I’ll know. It’s like one day, I wake up it’s this school, and the next day, it’s this school … it’s gonna come to me, though. I stay prayed up on it and keep working toward it.”

The first game on John Ehret’s schedule is set for August 16 vs. Carver Collegiate Academy.
