LSU football target Javon Vital leads LSWA 1A all-state hoops team
LSU football target Javon Vital Jr. helped headline the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A all-state basketball teams released this week.
Hamilton’s Christian’s 2027 multisport star became the school’s first student-athlete to receive a scholarship offer from the home-state Tigers’ football program in February.
In March, the sophomore point guard led his Warriors to their first-ever basketball state championship since the school opened in 1990.
And he opened April as this year’s LSWA Outstanding Player selection for Class 1A.
Vital averaged 15.5 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals for Division-IV Select champions.
He finished the season with six triple-doubles, including 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the semifinals to get by top-seeded Crescent City, which won the title in 2024.
He added 20 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals to pace Hamilton Christian past perennial power Southern Lab in the championship and earned Finals MVP honors.
The all-state selection marks Vital’s second of the school year after also earned the recognition for football season.
Vital was slotted onto the Class 1A team in December as a kick returner after a sophomore season in which his versatility was on full display in all three phases.
The electric playmaker finished the fall with 171 rushes for 1,528 yards and 25 touchdowns, 81-for-136 passing for 1,239 yards and 18 scores, a combined 460 yards and four scores on punt and kick returns and an interception on defense.
