Louisiana state lawmaker proposes resolution to only schedule LSU September home games at night

A proposed resolution in the Louisiana state legislature asks the SEC to only schedule LSU September home games at night. It argues high temperatures are a reason for the change.

Rep. John Illg Jr. (R-Harahan) introduced HCR 113 the non-binding concurrent resolution in the Louisiana House of Representatives on Monday. Illg argued since the heat index tends to reach 100 degrees or higher in September, he asked the SEC to avoid scheduling LSU for 2:30 p.m. local kickoffs. Instead, the resolution asks the SEC to consider starting games no earlier than 6 p.m.

During last year’s Sept. 21 game against UCLA, WBRZ-TV reported paramedics responded to multiple calls for heat exhaustion during the game. That was the only LSU September home game to be played during the day. A copy of the resolution was also sent to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.

“Due to the often extreme heat of September in this state and in the interest of protecting the health and safety of players, coaches, staff, and fans, it is appropriate that the Southeastern Conference take measures necessary to schedule September football games in the evening,” the resolution states.

“Therefore, be it resolved that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 14 urge and request the Southeastern Conference to schedule football games at Louisiana State 15 University after six o’clock in the evening during the month of September.”

During that victory over UCLA last year, WBRZ-TV reported more than 15 ambulance calls to Tiger Stadium for heat exhaustion. Baton Rouge EMS official Brad Harris noted the amount of preparation that goes into home games at LSU during that period of time when temperatures rise and fans may need medical attention.

“All of our ambulances are equipped with air conditioning,” Harris told WBRZ-TV. “They have IV fluids to resuscitate people if they need to, if they need to be rehydrated.”

Game times have not yet been announced for LSU’s 2025 season. The Tigers’ full schedule, including dates and opponents, came out earlier in the offseason.

LSU is getting ready for the third year of the Brian Kelly era in Baton Rouge. Garrett Nussmeier is notably back at quarterback after opting not to test the NFL Draft waters. He put up huge numbers in 2024, throwing for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns, but led the SEC with 12 interceptions.

The Tigers will kick off the 2025 season against Clemson. That game is set for Aug. 30 on the road at Clemson.
