LOOK: None of Ole Miss’ 10 sacks against Oklahoma came on blitzes

Ole Miss tied for the second-most single-game sacks (10) in program history Saturday against Oklahoma — a feat impressive enough on its own.

It’s made that much more eye-popping considering how the No. 19 Rebels (6-2, 2-2 SEC) pulled it off.

None of their sacks came on blitzes — just Ole Miss defensive linemen like Princely Umanmielen and Jared Ivey winning one-on-ones. Umanmielen returned from injury and tallied at least one sack in his third straight game. Ivey improved his sack total to 6.0 on the season. He’s tied with Dewayne Dotson for ninth all-time at Ole Miss with 15.0.

“It felt amazing because we work day-in and day-out,” Umanmielen said. “We go through a lot of walk-throughs and a lot of meetings that prepare us to get after the quarterback. Whenever it translates in the game it feels great.”

Second-year breakout star EDGE Suntarine Perkins had 11 tackles (eight solos) and a career-high 5.0 tackles for loss. His 4.0 sacks now stand as the most by a Rebel since Cassius Ware against Georgia in 1993. Ivey also forced and recovered a fumble.

“I feel like we showed how great our defensive line is today, which is a testament to the work these guys put in,” Umanmielen said.

The Oklahoma offensive line entered the day 132nd out of 133 FBS teams in sacks allowed.

The Sooners looked like it. Ole Miss got to Oklahoma starting QB Jackson Arnold, in particular, nine times — a school-record unto itself.

“We’ve got really good defensive linemen,” fifth-year Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said. “Kind of struggled (with) Princely not being there in the last game, knowing LSU was going to be such a pass-heavy game with those tackles. But it is what it is.

“It’s great to have him back. We’ve been in that position with both our losses — with the ball, ahead by one score and not pushing it to two scores. Because when you push it to two, now they’ve got to throw more and our pass rush can come alive. It’s really what I was hoping would happen when we had the ball in the last game.”
