Longtime Miami Norland coach Daryle Hiedelburg sees vast improvement in Hurricanes recruiting efforts

One of the longest-tenured high school football head coaches in South Florida, Miami Norland’s Daryle Heidelburg and his Vikings team made their way down to Coral Gables for a Mario Cristobal summer camp recently as the two programs looked to further their bond.

“This is our hometown team, so we have to represent them,” Heidelburg told CaneSport. “I’m good friends with coach Cristobal and a couple of the other coaches on the staff. I try to get my guys to come to show support because UM always shows us love.”

Throughout the day’s events, Heidelburg’s athletes impressed from start to finish, and 2025 ATH Darryll Desir was awarded a scholarship offer from Miami after his strong outing in the offensive and defensive lineman drills.

“Darryll is a freak of nature,” Heidelburg said. “He has very good mobility for his size, and he’s a humble kid. I think what Miami liked the most is that he’s just scratching his surface. We know this is not going to make or break our season, but it can give us some positives that we can take from it.”

Heidelburg believes Miami is trending in the right direction

Heidelburg, who has worked at Miami Norland since 2009, has seen five different head coaches (Randy Shannon 2007–2010, Al Golden 2011–2015, Mark Richt 2016–2018, Manny Diaz 2019–2021, and Mario Cristobal 2022–present) come and go in his time there and believes that current Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff have done some of the best recruiting work for Miami in a long time.

Over the years, Heidelburg has sent a handful of his Norland athletes to play for Miami, most notably former Hurricanes running back Duke Johnson and offensive lineman Erek Flowers.

With a handful of Viking prospects receiving interest from Miami currently, he thinks that trend can continue down the road as Miami extends offers

“Just more of a personal touch and more visibility,” Heidelburg said of what stands out about Cristobal and his staff. “I think those guys kind of know the city better. I think that extra visibility is helping the kids as far as recruiting and just some familiar faces that we all can relate to. They’re doing a good job so far.”

While Heidelburg believes the Hurricanes will be able to turn things around in the near future, a key component to that will be keeping the homegrown talents home, he says. If Cristobal and company are able to do that moving forward, expect Miami to be a force, according to Heidelburg.

“I think it’s big,” Heidelburg said. “The way guys are in South Florida, we kind of have a mentality that is like us against the world. The more guys that we can get on the team and the more guys we can surround ourselves with, the more they can bring that old Miami back. I’m sure there are many guys around the country that can play, but when you sprinkle in the right amount of homegrown talent, they may go a little harder because it means more to them.”
