Longhorns Recruiting Intel: Thursday

Longhorns Recruiting Intel: Thursday

The Texas Longhorns staff continues to battle in the Southeast Region for some of the top defensive prospects in the country. And battle may be putting it mildly.

After reeling in Louisiana defensive lineman Melvin Hills Wednesday over Ole Miss, the staff has turned their attention to three remaining high-priority targets on the defensive line.

In addition to the defensive line, defensive back remains a position of need defensively in the 2024 cycle. A stop at John Ehret High Wednesday brought new intel on 4-star corner Wardell Mack.

Inside Texas brings the latest on the a quartet of prospects on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive line recruiting

The competition for On3 4-star defensive lineman D’antre Robinson continues on with Texas and Florida. Robinson remains a Texas lean over the childhood favorite Gators. Florida chatted with Robinson Wednesday night after the 6-foot-3, 315-pounder had not had as much communication with the Gators in recent weeks. Robinson has remained in constant communication with Bo Davis and Tashard Choice since the visit, including this week.

Robinson moved up his announcement from July 21 to the 20th. The No. 271 ranked prospect in the On300 will announce at Jones High.

One important thing to know about Robinson’s recruitment is he is his own man. He’s his own decision maker. That doesn’t mean his sister in Arlington or other family members (mom and siblings) aren’t important in his life, but Robinson will make his own independent decision outside of what people think or may want him to do.

On3 Industry ranking 4-star T.J. Lindsey continues to be a Texas vs. Auburn battle right now with the Tigers swinging away. Lindsey and his family have been in communication with the Texas staff this week, including Steve Sarkisian and Bo Davis. The SEC is expected to win out, despite a strong run by the Miami Hurricanes.

Lindsey plans to make unofficial visits to Texas and Auburn the last weekend in July. That is if he doesn’t make a decision by July 20, the day when he reports to IMG Academy. One thought from someone close to the recruitment is Texas is where Lindsey feels like the best combination of football, academics and brand building is. That doesn’t mean the Longhorns will win out, however.

Inside Texas reported Wednesday that On3 Industry Ranking 5-star Dominick McKinley is a possibility to move up his timeline from the Under Armour All-America Game the first week of January 2024. There are a couple of key people close to the 6-foot-5, 280-pounder that would like him to make a decision prior to his senior season, get it out of the way, and not have the constant stress of the recruitment throughout the season. Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M all have a shot here with LSU working hard. LSU would like to get McKinley on campus the last weekend of July, and it remains to be seen if he will make the hour drive for a day.

Thoughts on Wardell Mack

After spending an hour or so at John Ehret High Wednesday, I came away with a couple of thoughts on the On3 Industry Ranking 4-star cornerback. Mack told Inside Texas yesterday he is likely to go to LSU for a day the last weekend in July before heading to Florida for two days.

One impression I got from the school visit was Florida is a school Mack likes quite a bit. The Gators having Jabbar Jaluke and Corey Raymond on the recruitment certainly helps their chances. Florida could also pick up a commitment or two at cornerback before the last weekend in July unofficial visit takes place. Something to watch for.

Mack also really likes Texas. Texas defensive backs coach Terry Joseph grew up a mile away from where Mack lives. There is a lot of comfort and familiarity in the recruitment. The family likes the idea of Texas.

Mack continues to say that a fall official visit to LSU is possible. There are also key people around him that would like a commitment prior to the season, and that is possible.
