LISTEN: Spring is over and the portal (again) beckons for Ole Miss football
In this edition of Talk of Champions, Ben Garrett and Chuck Rounsaville of the Ole Miss Spirit deep-dive into what all we learned from the Grove Bowl on Saturday.
Spencer Sanders had himself a day and finally looked like the decorated quarterback transfer the Rebels thought they were getting from Oklahoma State.
Consider the three-man Ole Miss quarterback battle officially back on.
“I think the fact (the Rebels) have three capable quarterbacks impressed me the most. Jaxson Dart was the No. 1 guy all spring, but I don’t think he had the best game Saturday. Granted, he was playing against the first-team defense every snap he took. But I really like what Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard did. I think quarterback is in great hands, and I think it’s going to keep applying pressure to Jaxson to up his game. If he doesn’t, I think (the Rebels) have capable people to come in and win with.”
Plus, Chuck has thoughts on the positions the Rebels could target in the second of two NCAA Transfer Portal windows, which opened on Saturday. Ole Miss is already among the schools pursuing Wyoming offensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon.
“On defense, (Ole Miss) needs at least one player on every level — defensive tackle, defensive end, a linebacker, a safety and a corner,” Rounsaville said. “At least one. On offense, I think (Ole Miss) needs another running back. They could stand a sure-enough, war-daddy offensive lineman. I think they’re OK unless they could get a difference-maker at wide receiver.”
Ole Miss could have practiced twice more this spring, but now-fourth-year head coach Lane Kiffin and staff have hit the road recruiting. The Grove Bowl, then, was the end. Spring is over. Done.
Time a full accounting of the work that was. Let’s get to it.
