LISTEN: Ole Miss is two weeks into spring, and Jaxson Dart is clinging tight to QB1
In this edition of Talk of Champions, Ben Garrett and Chuck Rounsaville of the Ole Miss Spirit talk the latest in Ole Miss spring football practices, including Jaxson Dart’s strong start and the Rebels’ second team-wide scrimmage, which was held on Saturday.
Which players are standing out? Who has surprised? Where does the three-man (Dart, Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard) quarterback race stand? And how is a rebuilding Ole Miss defense coming along under first-year head coach Pete Golding, formerly of Alabama?
Ben and Chuck cover it all.
RELATED: What did we learn about Ole Miss’ QB competition on Saturday? Let’s go to the numbers.
Here’s a brief excerpt from their extended conversation.
CHUCK: Just trying to keep up with spring football the last couple of weeks. It’s been fun since Lane Kiffin decided to give the media access to practices. I’ve learned a lot.
BEN: What’s stuck out the most?
CHUCK: Well, I can tell you this: Jaxson Dart’s going to be the quarterback next year. I like Spencer Sanders and I like Walker Howard, but Jaxson Dart is taking it up a notch. He’s taking care of the ball better. He’s stronger (and) his arm seems to be more accurate. His mechanics are better.
I just think he’s the guy moving forward unless something drastic happens.
BEN: It’s April 3 and we’re saying this already?
CHUCK: Yeah, I am. It’s no knock on the other two. I think they’re both quality quarterbacks. But Spencer’s struggling with a shoulder issue and you just can’t rely on that. Walker’s just young. He’s learning. Walker’s probably a better passer than Dart from an accuracy standpoint, and his deep ball is as good as I’ve seen (at Ole Miss) in a long time. But he doesn’t have any experience and he needs to get stronger. He could use 10 or 15 more pounds before he gets into the rigors of the SEC.
