Lexington native Lee Kiefer wins second Olympic gold medal in foil fencing

The 2024 Summer Olympics are off and running in Paris. A Central Kentucky native accomplished an impressive feat on Sunday. Lee Kiefer became the first U.S. women to win consecutive gold medals in individual foil fencing.

Kiefer defeated fellow American Lauren Scruggs 15-6 on Sunday.

The Notre Dame product attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and took gold at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Lee Kiefer became the third woman in foil fencing history to win two gold medals. Kiefer is currently enrolled in med school at the University of Kentucky. Her husband, Gerek Meinhardt, is also in Paris competing in foil.

After the victory on Sunday, Lee Kiefer might be the best female fencer in American history. Kiefer is a four-time Olympian with six Grand Prix gold medals, five World Cup gold medals, and 12 gold medals at the Pan American Championship for individual women’s foil.

A Bluegrass native just did something really cool.
