Legacy Motor Club obtains temporary restraining order in lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing

Legacy Motor Club has obtained its court requested temporary restraining order in its lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing over a contract dispute related to a charter agreement, per Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. The temporary restraining order ruling is redacted and likely prevents RWR from entering into another transaction, Matt Weaver of Sportsnaut reported.
Legacy filed the lawsuit in a court in Charlotte, N.C., last Tuesday. The lawsuit is over Legacy’s right to add an additional car for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Legacy already has two charter agreements guaranteeing Cup entries in 2026. It was seeking to add a third from RWR. In the lawsuit, Legacy described RWR as “strapped for cash and unable to compete at Cup Series level.”
Rick Ware Racing fires back at Legacy Motor Club over NASCAR Cup Series charter dispute
The two parties reached an agreement on March 3, 2025, to sell the charter to Legacy. However, Legacy claims that RWR is now attempting to back out of the contract.
“Despite having a binding deal in place, RWR wants to back out,” Legacy said in the complaint. “It has told Legacy that it will not, under any circumstances, close the parties’ transaction. Legacy has tried to talk sense into RWR, to no avail. Legacy’s patience has run out. It now brings this suit to enforce its rights and hold RWR to its deal.”
The Athletic reported that RWR was under the impression the agreement was for 2027, despite signing the agreement which listed 2026 as the date for execution. Thus, the confusion and the impasse. RWR released a statement claiming Legacy’s lawsuit “distorts the actual facts.”
“This lawsuit distorts the actual facts and is a misguided attempt to tarnish our reputation,” the statement read. “RWR has negotiated in good faith and operated with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We are confident that the truth will prevail and look forward to swiftly resolving this matter through the proper legal channels.”
Tommy Baldwin vehemently defends Rick Ware amid Legacy Motor Club lawsuit
Tommy Baldwin, competition director for RWR, showed his support for Rick Ware on the “Door Bumper Clear” podcast. Baldwin called it “heartbreaking” to see Ware “go through all this.”
“This is a tough one,” Baldwin said. “This goes back to just the way I feel our sport should be run off as integrity,” Baldwin said. “The thing that hurts is they come out and they’ve said a lot of bad things about Rick Ware. I’m here to tell you, you can say all you want about what goes on the track of the things we’re trying to do, but I’m here to tell you Rick Ware is not any one of those things as a person, as an individual, as a father, as a family member, as what they’re making him out to be.
“It’s heartbreaking to have to see him go through all this. I was sick, I was hurting with cancer, and I was out for six-eight months. That man took care of me, that man paid me, that man checked on me. That’s Rick Ware, that’s who the guy he is. He has worked his ass off to be in this position to be able to sell a charter and live the rest of his life the way he needs to live. He deserves that. Shame on me for not having the balls as he did, as much as he has not waited to sell mine. … I will fight for Rick Ware as much as I will fight for anybody right now because that is not Rick Ware.”
