LB Thomas Heiberger enjoys first visit to Nebraska; wants to make return trip to Lincoln
Sioux Falls (S.D.) Jefferson linebacker Thomas Heiberger visited Nebraska for the first time last weekend. The 6-foot-3.5 and 211-pound Heiberger got to Lincoln on Friday morning, did the tour, met with the coaches, and saw some current South Dakota Huskers and watched practice on Saturday.
“We left at about 6:00 on Friday morning and got there about 9:30,” Heiberger said. “We went to the stadium and into the players’ lounge. Omar was there, and we found him right away. The rest of the staff was there eating breakfast. There was a meeting in the team room, and we heard from coach Rhule.”
They broke out into groups following the meeting with all of the recruits. They could see the old facilities and the facility construction and caught up with some of the other staff members during some downtime.
“After the meeting, we split into groups of three or four. We did our measurables for the staff and then did a tour and a photo shoot. We also got some hard hats and went to the new facility. That was cool too. There was some downtime, and we would find someone from the staff to talk with.”

The following day the recruits were out on the field with the team for a 9:00 A.M. practice. Heiberger got to see a couple of current Huskers he knows on the team while at practice.
“We went to practice on Saturday morning until about 11:30,” Heiberger said. “That was cool seeing Nash Hutmacher and Randolph Kpai, a couple of kids from South Dakota, and that was good.”
On the first day of the visit, there was a chance to sit down with coach Dvoracek and hear where Nebraska sees Heiberger playing on defense. On Saturday, Heiberger was out watching the position drills to watch his spot.
“I had a meeting with coach Dvoracek on Friday and he sees me as a JACK linebacker in their scheme staying closer to the line of scrimmage. From what I have heard that defense is able to do different things so I think that they shift into what their guys are best at.”
Lots of energy from Nebraska staff and Thomas Heiberger watches linebackers closely at practice
One of the things that staff out to Heiberger about the practice was the effort by Matt Rhule and his entire staff. He said there was a lot of energy on the field on Saturday morning.
“All of the staff was working hard at practice, shifting, moving around quick, whether it was team or it was indy. Coach Rhule was always there to talk to someone if it looked right or it didn’t. He was enthusiastic out there at practice.”
This past weekend was the first visit to Nebraska for Heiberger. The visit went great, and he says that the people at Nebraska make it special.
“This was my first time ever being there to Nebraska,” Heiberger said. “I had expectations, and I think that it was a really great visit overall. The people make Nebraska special. I knew that Nebraska was going to have the facilities to compete with anyone, and their fanbase is electric. Overall it’s a great town, and the people bleed red.”
Heiberger would like to get back to Nebraska at some point. He says that he plans to take several other visits in the coming weeks before he could even consider a return trip.
“I would love to get back to Nebraska. Over the next couple of weekends, I have some business coming up with Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Illinois, and Washington. I am going to try and take some more visits.”
