Kirk Ferentz gives command for IndyCar race in Iowa
Iowa Speedway is playing host on Saturday night, with the Hy-Vee Homefront 250 taking place. IndyCar was back in the Hawkeye State for the third year in a row but has a history dating back to 2007. A cool event for everyone involved.
Before getting started, somebody needed to give the command. Nobody better than Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, sporting a Hawkeyes shirt while doing so. Ferentz belted out the most famous words in all of motorsports “Drivers, start your engines.”
A short but simple statement folks in the crowd loved. Based on the reaction, a ton of Iowa fans were in attendance and if there were some Iowa State fans present, they did not make their voices well heard.

Now, Ferentz and everyone else will watch 250 laps take place. Drivers will go just over 220 miles, hitting an exact number of 223.5 over the next few hours. Laps usually take under 20 seconds, being a high-paced event.
Kirk Ferentz preparing for huge season with Iowa
Ferentz has been around the Iowa program for a long time, having a ton of success. There was no denying the offense’s failures the last few seasons, though. A change at offensive coordinator was needed and the Hawkeyes moved on from Brian Ferentz this offseason.
Insert Tim Lester, the former head coach at Western Michigan. He has been tasked with inserting some excitement into the Iowa offense. By far the worst scoring production in the FBS last season, averaging just over 15 points per game, the numbers will have to improve.
Defensively, Ferentz has to be hoping for similar results. Iowa has been one of the best defenses in college football for multiple years, being the main reason the success has stayed. The 2023 squad gave up just 14.8 points per game, good enough for fourth in the country.
Iowa will begin the 2024 season against Illinois State before hosting Iowa State the following week. One more nonconference matchup against Troy takes place before getting into Big Ten play. Traditional rivalries will take place alongside seeing new Big Ten programs UCLA and Washington on the schedule.
Fans will have hope if the offense can improve, Ferentz could have his team is serious contention come December.
