Kirk Campbell continues to make in-roads with five-star QB Bryce Underwood
Michigan quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell provided his services during individual drills Thursday at the Wayne State Satellite Camp, working alongside the likes of five-star Belleville (Mich.) High’s Bryce Underwood and recently offered four-star Corona (Calif.) Centennial’s Husan Longstreet.
The visual of Campbell giving advice and helpful trips to the targeted gun slingers was an indication of his insistence to be hands on and not being content with just standing around. It was also one of only a couple public views of Campbell interacting with Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 ranked prospect in the 2025 class, who lives less than 30 minutes away from Ann Arbor.
“Coach Campbell is a great guy all-around,” Underwood told The Wolverine. “When it comes to football and everything outside of football. He has a high character and that’s great to see.”
Taking the reigns as soon as he earned the promotion back in January, Campbell is going out of his way to develop a personal bond with Underwood and his loved ones. Every top 2025 quarterback is conducting weekly phone calls with Campbell this offseason and Underwood is no different, relaying that he even communicates with the former Old Dominion offensive coordinator twice a week.
Heading into the summer, Underwood said that nothing has changed with how much he hears from Campbell.
“Of course it has,” Underwood said. “He actually wants to have a relationship with my family as well. Not just myself. That’s a really big deal for me.”
Michigan has brought in Underwood for the most amount of visits, totaling seven so far, including three times this spring alone. Back in March, the dual-threat menace took in two camp practices and then got a personalized experience around the facilities in late-April.
With Underwood showing increased interest in the local program, its social media savvy fans have caught on to the highest degree, something that Underwood is certainly aware of.
“I’ve been noticing it a lot,” Underwood said. “They’ve been blowing up my phone a lot (laughs). It’s cool to see all of these fanbases interacting and it’s also cool to see that they want me at their school. There’s always going to be more love from the people back home than anywhere else because that’s where your fanbase is. (Michigan fans) are one of the biggest who are showing the most love.”
Setting up unofficial visits to school haven’t been finalized yet by Underwood for the month of June but he’s looking to return to Michigan as early as possible.
“More than likely, I’ll figure a date soon,” Underwood said. “Once I do figure out that date, I’ll post it on social media and everything like that.”
At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Underwood is also ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the country and No. 1 sophomore in the state of Michigan, according to On3.
