Kirby Smart shares on Georgia injuries after South Carolina win
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia won 24-14 over South Carolina on with a strong second half, outscoring the Gamecocks 21-0 after the break, but they did it without offensive tackle Amarius Mims.
Mims suffered a left ankle injury in the first half and went to the locker room immediately. He returned to the sideline in a boot and on crutches.
“We practice that way all the time. It’s next man up,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said in response to the play of his offensive line after Mims’ injury. “It was an ankle sprain, but I don’t know how significant it was.”
Xavier Truss replaced Mims at right tackle upon the injury. Dylan Fairchild entered and played in place of Truss at left guard.
“I was proud of Truss bouncing out there and playing,” Smart said. “If you remember, he has a history at tackle. Proud of how he played.”
Key contributors on defense…
Georgia was also without a pair of key contributors on defense for the game on Saturday. Safety Javon Bullard (ankle) and outside linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. (sickness) were sidelined.
Bullard’s absence comes as a result of an injury he suffered last week. He warmed up but was not available.
“Javon, he was a game time decision,” Smart said. “He practiced on Thursday, went out and moved around. Warm ups he didn’t feel like he was all there so we had to go with other guys.”
Kendall Milton exits…
Georgia’s running back injuries continue to seem to pile up. After he has been banged up in the preseason but played through hamstring tightness in the first two games, Kendall Milton left in the third quarter.
“Kendall had, they taped him up and said he might be able to come back. I think it was an MCL.”
Milton had seven attempts for 25 yards including a key 15-yard pickup early in the third quarter.
