Kevin O’Sullivan wants Florida to keep its edge after 2-0 start in College World Series

If you are trying to make the College World Series championship series, nothing is more valuable than winning your first two games. Only needing one win to advance makes a major difference while getting a day off to rest your arms is significant too. Florida finds itself in this position right now after a win against Oral Roberts on Sunday.
Florida will take two days off, not scheduled to play again until Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT. The winner of a TCU/Oral Roberts elimination game will be the opponents. Once the Gators take the field once again, head coach Kevin O’Sullivan wants them to keep their sharp mindset.
“We’ve got to keep our edge,” O’Sullivan said. “We haven’t done it yet. So, sure, we’re one game away from the finals, but we’ve still got to play one more game. So they’ve just got to stay the course and what we’ve done the entire year and don’t take anything for granted and be ready to go on Wednesday.”
When having a game you can afford to drop, it may be easier to relax in the first game. A potential elimination game would be played on Thursday, with a win-or-go-home scenario being on tap. But Florida is not interested in playing in that one.
O’Sullivan thinks if the edge stays heading into Wednesday’s game, the Gators can give the team more time to rest.
If you look at the other side of the bracket, it’s a competitive one. LSU and Wake Forest have been two of the best teams in the country all season. Tennessee is no slouch either, proving their worth against SEC opponents. None of the three are going to roll over and die, fighting until the very end.
Florida is in a position where they could enter the championship series on another day of rest. Whoever they would face could be on the verge of playing for four consecutive days. A few dominos would have to fall but it’s entirely possible.
Until then, all O’Sullivan can do with his team is sit around and wait. Either TCU or Oral Roberts has to emerge as the opponent before Florida can fully begin to prepare. But once the matchup is official, it’s all guns blazing in Omaha. Making quick work and attempting to remain healthy over the next few days will be crucial to bringing another national championship back to Gainesville.
