Kentucky’s school record eight-year bowl streak has officially been snapped
An unfortunate consequence of today’s 31-14 loss to Texas? It officially eliminates Kentucky from postseason play. For the first time since 2015, the Cats will not go bowling, snapping the school-record streak of eight postseason appearances.
There are a lot of reasons why that stings. Not only is it an unexpected step backward in a season that had big expectations, it means Kentucky will not get the additional month of practices that come with a bowl, which are crucial for building the future. Instead, we’ll be treated to roster and staff speculation and attrition. What is normally an exciting period of preparation will be full of uncertainty and drama, all with the Early Signing Period just 11 days away.
First things first. Kentucky is now 4-7 with one game remaining: the Governor’s Cup vs. Louisville. On one hand, with the bowl streak snapped, there is nothing really to play for; however, it’s Louisville, and this team has always rallied for that game, most notably last season when they were double-digit underdogs to the No. 9 Cards and came away with a win. With an uncertain offseason ahead, maybe this team will band together to make a statement against their biggest rival. Play for another streak and go for a sixth straight win over the Cards.
That’s what you hope for, at least. We’ll know the result one week from now when the Cats host the Cards at high noon on Nov. 30 at Kroger Field.
Until then, pour one out and sing one song for our old Kentucky bowl streak, which will stay at eight.
